Page 2 CEOS Contribution to GEO ClimateCL-06- 02 Establish actions securing the provision of key data for climate studies and forecasting from satellite systems. CEOS (Barbara Ryan) ArchitectureAR-06- 09 Advocate establishing continuity for near real-time, 30-m (or better) resolution, multi-spectral remote-sensing coverage everywhere on the Earth’s surface, including support for the launch of a Landsat-equivalent follow-on mission. CEOS (Lawrence R. Pettinger) ArchitectureAR-06- 10 Advocate and facilitate the timely implementation of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission and encourage more nations to contribute to the GPM constellation CEOS (Chu ISHIDA) Data Management DA-06- 02 Develop a GEO data quality assurance strategy, beginning with space-based observations and evaluating expansion to in-situ observations, taking account of existing work in this arena. CEOS (Stephen G. Ungar)

Page 3 WGISS-21 GEO Action Task Teams (TT) to link their activities to the GEO 2006 WP (9 “WGISS”, then 33 “ADC” Tasks eventually to all 96 tasks.) Leaders to identify TT’s current & future activities that are related to GEO 2006 WP For each identified GEO 2006 task, nominations of the “WGISS” POCs (end of June 2006) Detailed proposal of contribution per GEO tasks to be proposed by “WGISS” POC to GEO Task POC Once agreed at GEO Task level, start to work

Page 4 WGISS Response to GEO Action WGISS-All requested to review GEO 2006 Work Plan and Task List Subgroup and Task Team Leads, working with team members, identified possible WGISS contributions to GEO tasks Consolidated list of potential contributions and proposed WGISS point(s) of contact

Page 5 Highlights of Identified WGISS Contributions Interoperable Architectures –Interoperability Handbook –“System of Systems” Engineering Interoperable Catalog Systems –Metadata exchange, service registry, clearinghouse International Directory Network (IDN) –Comprehensive, operational data and service discovery –Multilingual support Science and Applications Prototypes (WGISS Test Facilities) –Water Resources - WTF-CEOP –Disaster Response - WTF-Disasters –WGCV Support - WTF-Core Sites Emerging Technologies –GRID –Service Oriented Architectures

Page 6 Primary GEO Areas Societal Benefit Areas - Water, Disasters and Climate –WTFs provide model for applying WGISS technologies to actual projects and applications. –Support to GCOS Transverse Areas - Architecture and Data Management –WGISS technology and services task teams offer practical experience in technology development, reuse and infusion. –Technologies focus on data discovery and access, distributed data system architectures, data integration and resource sharing. Constellation Concept –WGISS experience with distributed data systems could play important role in virtual observing system concept.

Page 7 Achievements of WGISS-22 During SG/TT Sessions: –Continued discussion on how task team activities do or could relate to GEO tasks In WGISS Plenary Sessions on GEO: –Status update on GEO initiatives –Refined list of identified contributions and WGISS points of contact for relevant GEO 2006 tasks –Drafted list of potential contributions to address GEO 2007-9 Work Plan to be confirmed following consolidation of Work Plan –Assessed resources to make the contributions –Prioritized tasks on significance of WGISS contribution, effort/resources required to make the contribution and interest of WGISS agency(ies) in making contribution

Page 8 Ongoing Actions Following SIT approval, WGISS POCs to contact GEO Task POCs Complete review of 2007-9 Work Plan –Deadline for CEOS/SIT ?? Continue support for CEOS/SIT –GCOS, Constellations…

Page 9 Proposal for CEOS GEO Conference Recognizing need for coordinating all aspects of space EO missions in support of GEO, propose CEOS level annual (TBD) conference –Address technology, science, data policy, user needs… –Promote CEOS contributions to GEO activities –Reinforce role of CEOS as space coordinator for GEO –Promote CEOS and GEO to broader Earth science and applications community Have volunteer to host first conference (China) in spring 2008
