1 Taxonomy Placing organisms into groups based on them sharing similar characteristics. By continuing to sort organisms by shared characteristics, they can be placed into smaller groups. Eventually, an organism can be placed into a group in which it is the only member.

3 Taxonomic grouping have names...the biggest, broadest grouping of life (the groups having the most organisms) is based on cell structure and is called DOMAIN. Domains are then split into smaller groups called KINGDOMS. Kingdoms split into PHYLUMS. Phylums break down into CLASS. Class groupings are split into ORDERS. Orders divide into FAMILIES. Families break down into GENUS. Finally, Genus groups divide into SPECIES. Species groups often include only one organism and any organisms belonging to the same species must be able to interbreed.
