7 Types of speaking tasks Information-gap activities Interview at least 3 students in your class for their plan after graduation. For example: A: What is your plan after graduation? B: I think I am going to … A: Why? B: Because…

8 Types of speaking tasks Dialogues & role play For example: A: What’s the weather like tomorrow? B: It’s sunny. Why? A: I will go to visit Shaanxi Provincial Museum. Do you want to come? B: OK. I will be glad to. Task: 1.Perform it in different moods. Such as happy, sad, excited, bored. 2.Make the dialogue longer by adding two or more lines.

9 Types of speaking tasks Activities using pictures 1.Task1 P167-Task 6 2.Task Have a discussion about what has impressed you most during your study for your diploma within a group of four. Then draw a picture to show this. Finally give a presentation of it before the class.

10 Types of speaking tasks Find someone who… Task: P171 Walk around the classroom. Ask your classmates if they like to… Once you find someone who does, write down his or her name in the blank. Continuing asking until you have a different name written down by each activity. The first person to fill in all the blanks is the winner.

11 Types of speaking tasks Change the story Each student within a group of four to write a short story or description and then underline the verbs. The group together then makes a list of about 20 random verbs. Each group member reads his/her story but pause at every verb. The group then supplies one of the random verbs into that blank.

12 Why group work in organising speaking tasks 1) Using small group work because it increases the time for each student to practise speaking in one lesson. 2)Students are often afraid of criticism or losing face or they simply feel shy about speaking in a foreign language in front of a whole class.

13 Organising speaking tasks 3). Different small groups can work at different levels. 4). Small group work helps students learn to work cooperatively and it helps them develop interpersonal skills.

14 Conclusion 1.The trick in teaching speaking is to provide a chance for students to speak and make them speak. 2.It is best to keep the teacher’s talk at a minimum level. 3.Students should not be forced to speak when they are not ready yet.

15 Conclusion 4. Designing speaking activities that maximize students’ opportunity to speak is one of the central tasks for language teachers. 5. To think of more creative ways to give the students as much time to practise speaking as possible.
