5 T HE P ROTESTANT R EFORMATION  Prelude to Reformation  Spread of Christian Humanism  Goal was to reform the Catholic Church  Christian Humanism = people have the ability to improve themselves AND the church through education  Wanted people to be pious – have inner religious feelings  Desiderius Erasmus  Going through the motions to be “saved” was not good enough.  Erasmus believed people needed to live good lives every day.

6  Wrote Praise of Folly in 1509; criticized parts of society he wanted reformed. Especially monks!  Erasmus’ goal was to reform the Catholic church, not break away from it. Paved way for reformation.

7  Need for Reform  Renaissance Popes = super corrupt  More concerned with being political rulers than spiritual rulers  Priests were ignorant of their spiritual duties  Regular people wanted salvation – acceptance into heaven.  Priests started selling indulgences – excused people from sins and guaranteed them a free ride to heaven.
