3  From 1607-mid 1700’s settlers arriving in the new world had a great amount of autonomy (independence)  By the mid 1700’s colonist, particularly land-owning males benefitted immensely from being within the colonies, saw themselves as British

4  1756 – 1763, Britain was engaged in a global conflict with French over territorial interests (North America, India, and Latin America)  After the British victory, new territories were available for colonists west of the 13 colonies

5  British treasury was drained and national debt was through the roof due to its global struggles with France  Imposed a variety of new taxes,tariffs, and restrictions on the colonists without their consent through parliament legislation King George III “Tyrant” King of England

6  Within Europe 1600’s-1700’s, a new period of questioning arose titled the enlightenment, in which people debated the purpose of government  Enlightenment philosophes spread their ideas through writing and discussed/debated in Salons Did you know Benjamin Franklin traveled to France to discuss the enlightenment and convince them to help U.S

7  Locke- Natural Rights protected by the government  Montesquieu – Separation of power  Voltaire- Freedom of Religion  Rousseau – Equality of all men (with property)

8  Expanded on Locke’s idea of unalienable rights = life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness,  Emphasized the belief that the government should abide by a contract with the people to protect rights  If the government fails, people have the right to over throw it

9  With this declaration, war with the British was declared, U.S was led by local militia leader George Washington  With considerable aid from the French, and other European power, the colonists were victorious  1781 = Britain surrendered to the Americans in Yorktown, Virginia

10  Federal system = power shared between national and state governments, system of checks and balances  Still limited the rights of women and slaves, in spite of the idea of equality  First time in history a government was overthrown and a new government was in place
