1 November 18, 2015 Learning Target: Understand the evolution of African slavery Essential Question: How did slavery impact the history of Africa and newly claimed territories in the West? Do Now: In your own words, what is a slave? Success Criteria: I can explain how African slavery began and how it spread into the New World.

2 SLAVE:  A person who is the property of and wholly subject to another; a bond servant.  A person entirely under the domination of some influence or person: a slave to a drug.

3 Causes of African Slavery: Increase in the spread of Islam Enslaved non-Muslim 4.8M sent to Asia between 650-1600 Desire Europeans saw advantages Immunity Experience Less likely to escape Skin color made easier to catch Atlantic Slave Trade: buying, transporting, and selling of Africans for work in the Americas.

4 Triangle Trade: Transatlantic trading network along which slaves and other goods were carried between Africa, England, the West Indies, and the colonies in the Americas. Middle Passage: Middle leg of transatlantic trade triangle Packed into ships Beatings and disease Many committed suicide In America: Sold to highest bidder Worked in mines, fields, or as domestic servants Lifelong condition and hereditary

5 Consequences: Africa- Lost fittest members Families torn apart Introduced guns to Africa The Americas- Without, colonies would not have survived Expertise in agriculture Culture African-American population
