2 IN THIS CLASS, WE WILL LEARN TOUCH TYPING

3 I CAN ALREADY TYPE. WHY DO I NEED TO LEARN TOUCH TYPING?  Touch typing means typing without looking at your hands or keyboard  Learning touch typing will make you more efficient in the future  Many classes and jobs will require you to be a competent typist  Typing English essays  Taking notes (typing is much faster than writing)  Composing emails or letters  Many jobs involve some sort of keyboarding skills  Improvement in eye-hand coordination

4 KEYBOARDING POSTURE  Improper posture can lead to fatigue and injury

5 PROPER POSTURE  Sit up straight  Body is centered with the B on the keyboard  Feet flat on the floor  Fingers curved and on the home row  Wrists straight and not resting on desk  Elbows at sides  Eyes on copy

6 KEYBOARD AND MOUSE  Position the keyboard and mouse so that you do not have to reach to use them. They should be close to your body.  Arms should be bent at a 90° angle and close to your body  Wrists should be kept straight while typing and using the mouse  If necessary, use a wrist rest  Don’t rest wrists or elbows on the desk or table

7 AVOID EYE STRAIN  Sit directly in front of the monitor  Keep your head about two feet away from the screen  The top of the monitor should be at eye level and you should look slightly down at the screen  Focus on something at a distance every 15 minutes or so  Remember to blink to avoid getting dry eyes

8 INJURIES  Injuries can occur when proper keyboarding techniques are not followed  Stiff back and neck  Eye strain  Carpal Tunnel Syndrome  Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a type of repetitive stress injury. There is a channel, called the carpal tunnel, that passes through your wrist. This tunnel can become swollen and place pressure on a nearby nerve. The pressure can cause pain, tingling, and numbness in your hand. In severe cases, surgery is required.

9 KEYBOARDING TIPS  Do not sit at a computer for more than an hour or two at a time  If you must work at a computer for long periods, get up and walk around every half an hour to stretch  Always use proper keyboarding posture  Use an adjustable desk chair, not a folding or dining room chair

11  Feel for the bumps on the F and J keys  Left fingers: A S D F  Right fingers: J K L ;  Fingers rest on these keys at all times  When fingers leave the home row to press another key, immediately move them back to the home row
