17 Impact of WDP in Gujarat A study ‘Who Benefits from Participatory Watershed Development? Lessons From Gujarat, India’, conducted by Dr. Amita Shah in 2001 A large proportion (70 per cent) of farmers reported an increase in soil moisture Significant increase in the irrigated area (i.e. 100% increase) With increased irrigation, the gross cropped area has also increased Overall positive impact on crop productivity 87 per cent of the households reported that the project has improved drinking water facilities The total net returns (from all crops combined) to households has increased by 63 per cent

18 Impact of WDP in Gujarat (cont..) A Rapid assessment study conducted by DSC in 2007-08 in Gujarat (as part of the national study conducted by ICRISAT) found the following: Increase in cultivable land: 25% to 50% Increase in soil moisture: 33% Improvement in sources of irrigation: More than 50% Change in cropping pattern: Between 25% to 50% Employment creation

19 A Novel Endeavour: Premjibhai Patel Premji bhai Patel is the founder of Vruksha Prem Seva Trust (VPST) VPST has been working in Rajkot district of Gujarat since 1968 VPST has implemented 30 watershed projects under DDP (25 completed + 5 ongoing) The government has invested Rs. 7.72 crores in these projects For his efforts, Premjibhai has been awarded the National Water Award (Rs. 10 Lakh) for the year 2008 by the Ministry of Water Resources

20 VPST’s Strategy Innovative practices for Water Harvesting – Innovative structures: 714 on Rivulet Fofal – Area Treated: 29261.97 Ha. – Large Scale Plantation in Wastelands Impacts – Revival of Rivulet Fofal – 10-30% increase in Ground water level – Drinking Water Security in 14 villages – Decrease in soil salinity – 5105 ha. brought under irrigation – Cropping Intensity increased
