2 First English Colonies Jamestown- 1606 the Joint Stock Company funded a group of English citizens to establish an American Colony. This became the Virginia Company. 1607 a group of 100 arrive in the Chesapeake Bay region, the colony struggled from the beginning because of starvation and sickness. Pamphlets were spread around London calling Virginia a “paradise”.

3 Jamestown Cont. 1624 Virginia becomes a royal colony under control of the King to ensure profits. A governor was appointed and a legislature was established made up of colonists called The Virginia House of Burgesses. This is the first form of self-government(Democracy)!!!

4 Massachusetts Bay Colony 1630 about Puritan 1,000 English settlers left England to escape religious persecution. By 1643 Mass Bay Colony had grown to about 20,000 people in 20 towns including its Capital Boston. This Colony believed that all people of the same religion should live in peace together.

10 Slave Trade -In 1690 about 16,000 slaves are in the Americas. -By 1750, around 235,000 slaves are in the colonies, majority of those in the South.

11 Bell Ringer 9/14 The Mayflower Compact and the Virginia House of Burgesses are most closely associated with (1) abuses by absolute monarchs (2) establishment of religious toleration (3) steps toward colonial self-government (4) adoption of universal suffrage

12 Mercantilism- Idea that a country should collect as many natural resources as possible. More colonies more resources!!!!! Salutary Neglect- Allowing colonies to govern themselves through colonial legislatures (ex. House of Burgesses). Royal Governors oversaw legislatures. Increased Immigration- By mid 1700’s colonial population was increasing rapidly. French settlers were in the Ohio River Valley, feared their land was going to be overtaken.

13 French and Indian War 1754- War between England and France breaks out. Fighting was in North America, Europe, and Asia. Many Native America tribes join with the French. -France would have several early victories but tide of war would turn in 1757 when William Pitt becomes Prime Minister of England. Pitt raises taxes and puts more money towards the war. - Once tide of war turns towards British, Iroquois League now sides with British.

14 French and Indian War Sept. 1759- British would capture the City of Quebec under General Wolfe, the Capital of New France. Sept.1760- Montreal is captured by the British, gave them control of Canada. 1761- Fort Detroit seized

15 French and Indian War 1763- Treaty of Paris signed officially ending the war. -British would gain all land east of the Mississippi River and Canada. -City of New Orleans was given to Spain -Florida now under British Control.

16 Proclamation of 1763 -Closed of land west of the Appalachian mts to colonists. -Colonists wanted to go west to new British land gained from the war. Colonists ignored British Proclamation and went west anyways. -British could not protect colonists from Native American raids.
