2 1970’S: NIXON & WATERGATE Objective: SWBAT examine the cause & consequences of the Watergate Scandal by completing a chronology timeline. Purpose: “Our constitution works. Our great republic is a government of laws, not of men.” President Ford Standard(s): 7.10 - Students will describe the rise of the counterculture during the 1960s and assess the effectiveness of this movement in shaping public policy by utilizing one of the big 11 social studies skills.. 7.8 - Students will analyze how music, art, and literature reflected the social changes of the 1960s by utilizing one of the big 11 social studies skills. H3.[9-12].23 - Explain how literature, music, media, and the visual arts affect social change.

4 WARM-UP: TIMELINE REVIEW Copy the timeline on pages 1056 & 1057 onto the HUGE 70’s section. Start by filling in ALL of the American Events. Fill in 1971, 1973, & 1980 for World Events. 12 minutes.

5  Domestic  1. Inflation – Large Vietnam spending. Used Deficit Spending.  2. Oil Crisis – Oil production in decline. Arab nations imposed embargo on the U.S.  3. Social Programs – Cut back on social welfare. New Federalism: States  Greater responsibility.  4. “Southern Strategy” – Did not support Civil Right’s as much. Froze desegregation.  5. 6  World  1. Realpolitik – “Practical Politics”. Nations make decisions based on their own strengths vs. morality.  2. Détente – Relaxation in tensions between the U.S. & USSR.  3. China – Allowed China entrance to the U.N.  4. Limited Test Ban Treaty of 1963 – Ended testing of nukes in the atmosphere.  5. Weapon Talks – SALT 1: 5 year agreement that “froze” production of new ICBM missiles. 10 WARM-UP: CNN STUDENT NEWS Receive Notebook and write NAME & CLASS PERIOD # on the front (if possible) and back. Write down 5 IMPORTANT facts as you watch the video. 1 point = 1 correctly written fact. I need to see at least (a minimum of) 5 facts.
