William Randolph Hearst’s rise to prominence began in 1887 when his father gave him control of the San Francisco Examiner. He turned the Examiner into a muckraking publication devoted to exposing political corruption and crusading for civic improvement.

Using the money he earned publishing the Examiner, Hearst purchased the New York Journal in 1894. This put him in direct competition with publisher Joseph Pulitzer and his paper the New York World

Both papers began printing increasingly sensational articles.

As trouble in Cuba escalated, so did the competition for readership between Pulitzer and Hearst. Both looked to print the most sensational headlines possible to draw in new readers.

Hearst served in the House of Representatives from 1903-1907. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of NYC in 1905 and again in 1909 on a reform agenda. He lost as a New York gubernatorial candidate in 1906 when he ran representing a party of his own creation: The Municipal Ownership League. Most scholars believe he lost only because of the Tammany Hall political machine’s influence.

With his money, Hearst built his palatial estate La Cuesta Encantada (The Enchanted Hill) in San Simeon, CA. The house is around 90,000 square feet and has 38 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, and 19 sitting rooms. The grounds include a private zoo, several recreational facilities, and an extensive collection of rare art.
