1 Ethnic Groups of LA SSWG7f. Describe the various ethnic and religious groups in Latin America; include South America, Central America and the Caribbean, as well as major customs and traditions.

2 Indigenous People People who – Lived in a particular area for a long period of time – Existed before colonialism – Have a different culture than that of the nation Often do not have protected rights from the governments Many people trace their lineage to the ancient people—Aztec, Maya, & Inca

3 Quechua Found in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, & Colombia Speak Quechua Farmers in lower Andes, herders in the higher Andes (llamas & alpacas) Communal ownership Famous for weaving Men wear more modern clothing (except ponchos), women more traditional including distinctive hats

5 Carib Found in Lesser Antilles (tiny islands in Caribbean) Famous for music fused with dance (women write lyrics) Polytheistic Patriarchal society Some rituals involve cannibalism Weapons often include poisoned elements

7 Yanomami Found in the Amazon Rainforest Shabono shelters Shifting cultivation but also hunting & fishing During festivals women participate in the eating of ground up bones of dead family members Arranged marriages Considered to be a very violent culture
