3 33333 20TH CENTURY - during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) there were many demands for social reforms: 1)Education was modernized 2)Labour movement grew stronger GENERAL CHARACTERISTIC The Panama Canal - was built by the U.S.A. in 1904 – 1914 on land leased from the Republic of Panama (the Canal Zone) - increased the U.S influence in Central America -is a 77.1 km ship canal -it takes 6 to 8 hours to pass through the Panama Canal.

WWI. -Te position of the USA was greatly strengthened by the WWI -The USA entered the war as late as 1917 -116.000 Americans were killed, 53.000 of them in action -When the WWI was over – USA was the richest creditor country in the world -President Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921) played an active part at the peace conference and in setting up : The League of Nations

PERIOD - USA returned to its isolationist foreign policy - It kept out of the League of Nations - Immigration into USA was restricted - A period of increasing prosperity - A period of an increase in crime – especially organized crime – gangsterism – Chicago -Result of the policy of prohibition of alcoholic drinks GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

10 10 POST WORD WAR I. PERIOD GREAT DEPRESSION -In 1929 – great crash on Wall Street -It was the beginning of a deep, worldwide economic crisis – the Great Depression -In 1932 – when the crisis was at its height – 17 million unemployed

PERIOD GREAT DEPRESSION -In 1932 Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Democratic Party candidate) became the president -He introduced a series of measures, which were termed : the New Deal -it was the first attempt at governmentintervention in U.S. economic life - government supported banks, farmers, workers -Public works provided work for the unemployment – The Tennessee Valley Authority Act – dam, power plants were built by Government to provide work

14 14 FRANKLIN DENARO ROOSEVELT -His New Deal reduced unemployment from 17 million to 8 million -He was very popular -The only president who served 3 successive terms and was elected to a 4th (1933-until his death 1945) -Diplomatic relations between USA and the Soviet Union POST WORD WAR I. PERIOD

THE USA – IN THE WAR -USA played a leading part in the war in the Far East, in the allied invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy Dwight David Eisenhower „Ike“ -The supreme commander -He directed the invasions of Sicily and Italy in 1943 and of Normandy in 1944 -He dies in 1945 shortly before the end of war

Harry Truman -Eisenhower was succeeded by Harry Truman, who was later responsible for dropping the atomic bombs on Japan -The 1st bomb – over Hiroshima 6th August 1945 -The 2nd bomb – over Nagasaki 9th August 1945 -To drop the A-bomb was dictated by political rather than military considerations -It was the first major act heralding the cold war
