SAFER DESIGN : A CASE STUDY The design of a new public link 299 Barkly Street Footscray Yarra Community Housing Stoll Long Architecture

1. FUNCTION To be safe a space must be used, to be used a space must perform a clear role In this case the link provides a short-cut from a car park to the shopping street

2. SIGHTLINES The route and the destination need to be clearly visible The end of the lane is in view and there are no unseen corners

3. ACTIVATION The layout and uses should encourage the presence of people in the space at all times of day and night Not only is there a cafe which spills out into the lane, but the building foyer is entered from the lane

4. SURVEILLANCE The apartment balconies are angled to look along the lane and even the car park is viewable through its screen Maximise the number of eyes on the space, even the potential for people to overlook implies security

5. LIGHTING Instead of a tunnel, the lane is open to the sky Well lit spaces are safer and natural daylight is the most effective lighting

6. QUALITY Simple, robust materials and considered detailing A well designed space promotes care and a feeling of safety
