1 READING HIGHLIGHTS Unit5 , The Eternal Terracotta Warriors

2 STRUCTURE A small group of farmers discover a clay figure of a man lying beneath the ground. Thousands of life-size figures of soldiers were representation of the legendary army of Qin Shi Huang. The army was organized into three groups.

3 Though a great achievement, Qin Shi Huang ordered many of his engineers and artisans be sealed in the tomb with him after he died. No two soldiers look alike in their facial features and expressions. Research has revealed that the soldiers were made on an assembly line. Many of Qin’s soldiers were caught in the tides of history.

4 EYES ON PHRASES Line2 : A small group of farmers from a village near Xi’an set out to dig a well. Ex→They set out to perform an opera. Line11 : Thousands of life-size figures of soldiers, chariots, and even horses all stood at the ready, as if they were about to wage war against an unseen enemy. Ex→All the runners were at the ready.

5 Line17 : Some soldiers were army with crossbows or spears, while messengers stood with horses ready to deliver orders to the waiting troops. Ex→The country is were army with nuclear weapons. Ex→The mailman delivered the letter to my hometown. Line21 : Archeologists estimate that the army, along with Qin’s tomb, took more than 700,000 workers and 38 years to build. 6 Line25 : Some stare angrily ahead with knotted brows. Others are deep in thought with tight lips and lowered eyes. Stilll others smile cheerfully and naively. Ex→There are many people in the park ; some are walking, others are jogging, still others are chatting. Line27 : Many believe that the soldiers were modeled on Qin’s actual army. Ex→ Mary modeled herself on her mother.

7 P.14 、 Line11 : Though their names are lost, the soldiers are remembered as each vistor gazes in wonder at their strong and duty- bound faces that have remained for over 2,000 years. Ex→ I love this painting. And I could gaze at it for a long time.
