1 This is an American Sign Language sentence type. It is not actually a way to ask a question, but rather a way to make a statement. Rhetorical Question

2 Rhetorical Question… Don’t let the name of this sentence type confuse you! It is actually a way to make a statement in ASL. Rhetorical questions use the “WH” words as a way to make statements. Some of the “WH” words include: “WHERE”, “WHY”, “WHO”, etc. In the past, we used these “WH” words to ask “WH” questions…this is different. The Non-Manual Signal for a rhetorical question is raised eyebrows.

3 Rhetorical Question… I am going to Six Flags Friday. FRIDAY I GO-TO WHERE SIX-FLAGS My Mother isn’t going to drive, she is sick! MY MOTHER NOT DRIVE WHY SHE SICK We are going out to eat to celebrate his new job tomorrow. TOMORROW WE EAT RESTAURANT WHY CELEBRATE HIS NEW JOB rhq Notice that the line is above the “WH” word only. The “rhq” sentence type means the eyebrows are raised.
