2 OBJECTIVES HONE MEASURING SKILLS MASTER THE USE OF BALANCES, CALIPERS, AND RULERS ACCURATELY MEASURE AND RECORD CHANGES IN WIDTH, LENGTH, AND VOLUME OF THE “SHARK” “SNAKE” OVER TIME COMPARE ACTUAL MEASUREMENTS TO CALCULATED MEASUREMENTS CALCULATE PERCENT CHANGES DETERMINE RATES OF CHANGE COMPARE RATES OF CHANGE IN MASS, WIDTH, LENGTH, AND VOLUME

3 MATERIALS EXPANDABLE SHARK/SNAKE SMALL STORAGE CONTAINER WATER METRIC RULER CALIPER MARKER (WET ERASE) LAB ACTIVITY DATA COLLECTION PAGE (EVERYONE)

4 PRE-LAB WORK YOU WILL MEASURE THE LENGTH AND WIDTH OF THE SHARK/SNAKE OVER A PERIOD OF 5 DAYS 1.REMOVE LID FROM THE STORAGE CONTAINER 2.PLACE LID ON BALANCE 3.RECORD THE MASS 4.PLACE SHARK ON LID, RECORD THE MASS OF BOTH 5.DETERMINE THE MASS OF THE SHARK (- MASS OF LID) 6.MAKE A HYPOTHESIS: CLEARLY WRITE IT ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR DATA RECORDING SHEET (IF…..THEN….)

5 DAY 1 A.DETERMINE WHERE YOU WILL TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS (LAB STATION) THE LENGTH OF THE SHARK IS THE DISTANCE FROM ITS HEAD TO ITS TAIL THE WIDTH OF THE SHARK IS THE THICKNESS OF THE SHARK FROM SIDE TO SIDE (DO NOT INCLUDE FINS!) A3. USING A PERMANENT MARKER, MARK THE SPOT WHERE YOU WILL MEASURE THE WIDTH OF YOUR SHARK/SNAKE (JUST A THIN LINE)

6 DAY 1 B. TAKE MEASUREMENTS OF DRY SHARK/SNAKE USE THE CALIPER/RULER TO DETERMINE THE LENGTH AND WIDTH. RECORD. DETERMINE MASS OF DRY SHARK (PUT SHARK ON LID!). RECORD. UNDER VOLUME- WRITE N/A C. TAKE MEASUREMENTS OF WET SHARK TAKE SHARK OUT OF WATER. DRY OFF. USE THE CALIPER/RULER TO DETERMINE THE LENGTH AND WIDTH. RECORD. DETERMINE MASS OF WET SHARK (PUT SHARK ON LID!). RECORD. VOLUME: ADD 1L OF WATER TO A 2 L PITCHER. BE EXACT. RECORD AS 1000ML. COMPLETELY SUBMERGE YOUR SHARK IN THE WATER AND OBSERVE THE CHANGE IN WATER LEVEL. DETERMINE THE VOLUME CHANGE (- 1000ML FROM THE FINAL WATER VOLUME) D. TRANSFER YOUR SHARK AND THE WATER FROM THE PITCHER INTO THE STORAGE CONTAINER

7 DAY 2-5 C. TAKE MEASUREMENTS OF WET SHARK TAKE SHARK OUT OF WATER. DRY OFF. USE THE CALIPER/RULER TO DETERMINE THE LENGTH AND WIDTH. RECORD. DETERMINE MASS OF WET SHARK (PUT SHARK ON LID!). RECORD. DETERMINE % CHANGES FOR LENGTH/WIDTH/MASS TO CALCULATE THE PERCENTAGE INCREASE: FIRST: WORK OUT THE DIFFERENCE (INCREASE) BETWEEN THE TWO NUMBERS YOU ARE COMPARING. THEN: DIVIDE THE INCREASE BY THE ORIGINAL NUMBER AND MULTIPLY THE ANSWER BY 100. IF YOUR ANSWER IS A NEGATIVE NUMBER THEN THIS IS A PERCENTAGE DECREASE

8 DAY 2-5 C. TAKE MEASUREMENTS OF WET SHARK TAKE SHARK OUT OF WATER. DRY OFF. USE THE CALIPER/RULER TO DETERMINE THE LENGTH AND WIDTH. RECORD. DETERMINE MASS OF WET SHARK (PUT SHARK ON LID!). RECORD. VOLUME: ADD 1L OF WATER TO A 2 L PITCHER. BE EXACT. RECORD AS 1000ML. COMPLETELY SUBMERGE YOUR SHARK IN THE WATER AND OBSERVE THE CHANGE IN WATER LEVEL. DETERMINE THE VOLUME CHANGE ****** AS YOUR SHARK GROWS IN SIZE AND MASS, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE GREATER INITIAL VOLUMES OF WATER TO MAKE THE VOLUME MEASUREMENT. MAKE SURE TO NOTE THE CHANGES AND FIND THE VOLUME USING THESE NEW ML. D. TRANSFER YOUR SHARK AND THE WATER FROM THE PITCHER INTO THE STORAGE CONTAINER
