Pre-Lab Identify the I.V. and D.V. Write a hypothesis. Write a problem statement List materials Write a procedure (Think about how you will collect data to answer the problem question.)

Variables: A quantity that can change! Independent variable (IV) = decreasing mass Variable that “I decide what the variable is and how it changes” Dependent variable (DV) = density Variable that is measured to see what effect the IV has on it.

Hypothesis If the ___________________ ___________ Pick a quantity that changes State how it changes Then the ________________ will__________ State the variable you will State how you measure to see if it changes think it will change Because ____________________________ State the reason you think the DV will change and how it will change as a result of the changes to the IV

Helpful Tips Carefully measure each block to the nearest tenth of a cm. When calculating the final answer round off and use the correct significant figures. You are writing a rough draft today. Neatness doesn’t count but if you can’t read it later that is not good either.

Calculating Data Equation for Volume: V = l*w*h (Measure CAREFULLY!!!) Use centimeters (cm) Equation for Density: (Divide mass (in grams) by volume (in cm 3 )) Density = mass D = m volume V

Problem Question What is the effect of decreasing mass on the density of the wood? Independent variable (IV) = decreasing mass Variable that “I decide what the variable is and how it changes” Dependent variable (DV) = density Variable that is measured to see what effect the IV has on it.

Materials and Procedure. Materials 1. Ruler 2. Mass scale 3. Different sized blocks of the same type of wood. Procdure Record 1.Mass each block of wood. Record. 2.Measure and record the length, width and height of each block of wood. Record 3.Calculate the volume of each block of wood. Record. Record 4.Calculate the density of each block of wood. Record.

Data table IVData to calculate DV

Analysis What did your data show? Did your data support your hypothesis? Valid or invalid? Use your data to support your claim! Conclusion Why did your data show what it showed? Were there any discrepancies in your data? Explain why your data is what it is!
