What Was Life Like for Native Americans of the Time Period? By: Miss Sheri

What You Know From Reading Sometimes adopted captives in place of a family member. Relied on the three sisters: corn, squash, and beans as a food source. Women were heads of the household. Made own food, clothing, utensils, shelter, etc. Sometimes traded for goods they could not make.

Culture of the Native Americans Did not understand that settlers thought they were selling their land because in their culture land could not be individually owned. Lived in long houses. Elders were in charge of making important decisions. Women were greatly respected.

The Effects of the Settlers on this Culture Natives came to depend more and more on products they traded the white men to get. (Such as guns, whiskey, broadcloth, cooking utensils, beads, etc.) Settlers used much land for livestock which had previously housed large game. Many natives caught illnesses they would never have been exposed to had they not come into contact with settlers.

Rules of War If a family member had been lost to the enemy, a family could get a captive or a scalp in place of the family member. Male captives had to run the gauntlet, but female captives generally did not have to run it. Men did the fighting and raiding in small war parties.

Vocabulary Gauntlet- a test whereby captured men could be adopted into a tribe. Corn Silk- the thin, silvery, strands of vegetation that grow out of the top of corn stalks. Buckskin- deer skin that has been treated so that people can manipulate it into clothing. Broadcloth- brightly colored, very durable cloth. Turquoise- a rock often used in decorative jewelry along with silver.
