20. Simple spouts consist of pulling the rim outward to form a channel. Although easily accomplished in the basic forming, making spouts that won't drip when used can take some practice. To make the spout, choose an area on the rim's edge of about one inch. With one hand, make a "V" symbol with your first two fingers. With your fingers pointing upward, rest the fingers on the outside of the pot's rim. The opening between the fingers will be where the spout will form, as the fingers themselves support the rest of the rim. If you need to, adjust your finger positions. For example, you'll see on the example photo that I am supporting the rim differently, due to the slope of the pitcher's belly. Keeping the clay well supported, wet the forefinger of your other hand and lightly, gently stroke the one inch area between the support fingers. Move from the interior of the pot outward. Repeat several times, until the spout has formed to your satisfaction.
