2  These are diets to improve health conditions or diseases  Regular Diet- balanced diet  Liquid Diet- should be used for a short period of time (often after surgery) Clear liquid- water, apple, or grape juice, fat free broths, plain gelatin, fruit ice, ginger-ale and tea, or black coffee with sugar Full liquid- stained soups and cereals, fruit and vegetable juices, yogurt, hot cocoa, ice cream, pudding, sherbert

3  Soft diet- foods that require little chewing  Oatmeal, soups, ice cream and yogurt  Diabetic diet- avoid foods high in sugar  Carefully control calories and carbohydrates  Low-cholesterol diet- avoid beef, liver, pork, cheese, palm oil, eggs, butter  Fat-restricted diets- avoid high fat foods  Chocolate, nuts, fried foods, salad dressing, fatty meats

4  Sodium-restricted diets- avoid: adding salt to food, processed foods, pickles, olives, smoked meats or fish  Protein diets-  Protein rich (high) Promote weight gain Meats, fish, milk, eggs, cheeses  Low protein Usually used for kidney disease or failure

5  Bland diet- food that will not irritate the GI tract ( ex. No spices, caffeine)  Low residue diet- eliminate foods high in bulk and fiber  Benefit: those with diarrhea and colitis (may slow down the movement of GI tract  High residue diet- helps with constipation  Increase fiber intake and hydration

6  Fluid restriction- monitor and limit the amount of free fluids consumed  Use of thickeners for residents at risk of aspiration.  Thin liquids  Nectar thick  Honey thick  Pudding thick
