2 Defeats and Victories -Warhawks thought the war would be an easy win -U.S. was not prepared -General Hull led an attack on Canada from Detroit and was defeated back in Detroit -Multiple attempts to invade Canada failed -Opponents of the war called it “Mr. Madison’s War”

4 U.S. Naval Strength -Commander Oliver Hazard Perry commanded Lake Erie navy -Flagship was the USS Niagara -Used green wood to construct the ships -Defeated British forces in a large naval battle on Lake Erie -British were forced to retreat to Canada

6 Defeat of the Creeks -Andrew Jackson defeated a significant amount of Creek Indians -Gave the U.S. most of their land -Big victory for Jackson

7 Attack on the Capital -Britain fought war with France and U.S. -Why would that be complicated for GB? -British attack Washington D.C. -Burn the White House down -Dolly Madison (President Madison’s wife) saved GW’s portrait

8 Creation of the National Anthem -Occurred at Fort McHenry (in Baltimore) -British spent all night bombing the fort -Americans shot back determined to prevent British from landing -Americans succeeded and lasted the entire night -Francis Scott Key wrote down the events of the night as a poem, and in 1931 became our national anthem

10 Turning Point at Plattsburgh -British tried capturing Plattsburgh, a key city on Lake Champlain -Brought over 10,000 troops -American naval forces defeated the British and forced them North -Convinced British that a war with the United States would be too expensive

11 End of the War -British and American delegates meet in Ghent, Belgium -Treaty of Ghent did not address impressment or give U.S. Canada, but it did end conflict

12 A Final Great Battle -After the treaty was signed, British marched on New Orleans -Word had not made it to North America that the war was over -Andrew Jackson put New Orleans under marshal law -Jackson’s men dominated the British at the Battle of New Orleans -Huge moral victory for America -Andrew Jackson becomes a national hero

14 Issues with the war -Federalists opposed the war -Hartford Convention: Occurred in New England where a few delegates failed to get New England to secede. -Federalists were deemed unpatriotic and disappear as a political party -War Hawks became leaders of the Republican Party -Republicans adopt the belief in a strong national government -How does this differ from their original beliefs? -New sense of national pride and gained world respect!
