4 Examples of books from each section
Picture book Chapter book Reference book Non-fiction (Information) Biography

5 Picture Book Section The first section is called Picture Books. This section is fiction.

6 Picture Books Picture books use illustrations (pictures) to tell lots of the story. Illustrations are very, very important in picture books. Sometimes they are even more important than the words!

7 Picture book example This is a made-up story with lots of pictures. The pictures are an important part of the story.

8 Chapter Book Section Another section is called Fiction. Some of the books in this section are called chapter books.

9 Chapter Books Chapter books usually have more words than picture books, and fewer pictures. In chapter books, the words are more important for the story than the pictures.

10 Non-fiction (Information) Section
The third section is Non-Fiction Books (also called Information Books)

11 Non-Fiction / Information Books
Non-Fiction (Information) books are stories that tell about things that are real. Non-Fiction books have real places and real things in them. Non-Fiction can be about people, about places, about things – they can be history, or geography, crafts, sports, weather, science fair projects, or ants!

12 Biography Section The fourth section is called Biographies. Biographies are a kind of non-fiction.

13 Biographies Biographies are about real people.
Biographies tell about the life of a person that lived in the past or even one that lives now. Biographies are true, and they are about real people, not made-up characters.

14 Biography example This is a biography about a real person.

15 Reference Books A reference book is a book that is full of information. There are many different types of reference books such as almanacs, atlases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks.

16 You have learned about:
The arrangement of the library and the books in each section: Picture books (fiction) Chapter books (fiction) Information books (nonfiction) Biographies Reference books

17 Taking Good Care of Books
Decide on a safe place to keep your library book when you are not reading it. Handle books with clean hands. Use a bookmark. Keep books away from food and drinks. Never leave a library book outside. Alert the teacher-librarian when a book needs mending.

18 Library Routines You will visit the library one time each week.
You may check out two books. The borrowing period is for one week. If the library books are not returned on the regular library day, your child will not be able to check out another book until the books are returned.

19 Overdues and Losses Overdue notices are issued once a month.
If a book is lost or damaged you are expected to pay for it. Please return all books before moving.

20 Computer Lab Our library media center has 10 computer stations.
Each student is given a user id and password to access the network and the Internet.  These userids and passwords are private and should not be shared with anyone.  Each student is given access to a network drive to save school related assignments.

21 Keep up the good work! When you come to the library next time, you’ll know where to look for each type of book. You’ll be able to find the books you want too, by knowing where to look! You’ll also be given a computer id and password!
