2 Mrs. Jowers’Class News Sept. 25, 2015 Oh my goodness! I can’t believe that I will be writing an October newsletter next week! Where has the month gone! This week we practiced all of our safety drills. The kids all did a great job, especially on the lock down drill. I was very proud of them. We also had our author visit this week. Mrs. Simoneau was wonderful! Next week we will have Bookmobile on Wednesday again, so make sure you bring back those books! We are also sending home information for our first field trip! So look for that as well. This week we wrapped up our first unit in the reading series! Every unit concludes with a group research project. These projects were lots of fun for all of us. I have taken pictures and will post them on the website for all to see. There was also a lot of testing. I broke it up over several days, so it wouldn’t feel so overwhelming Next week we will be back to normal, starting our second unit. So, check the back page for our vocab, high-frequency and on level spelling lists. Math Madness Our focus this week was on Addition Number Stories. We started the week reading and solving number stories and by the end of the week we were creating our own for others to solve! On Thursday and Friday of each week, we have a Math Workshop time which allows us to practice skills we’ve been working on within our unit in small groups around the room.

3 Mrs. Jowers’ Class News Oct. 23, 2015 Thanks to all our wonderful parents who were able to come to our field trip today. It is great to have so many people participate and it turned out to be a really nice day! Thank you also for signing up so quickly for conferences as well. I am looking forward to seeing everyone. Next Wednesday morning we will start the day in our classrooms and then begin the parade around 9:00. The party will follow the parade. I can’t wait to see all the costumes! Oct. 26,27 & 29 Conferences Oct 28 – Class Parties Nov. 9 – No School In reading this week, we continued our study of animals. This week we focused on comparing animal babies to their parents. We have learned a lot about animal families. Next week, we will begin our fifth week of the unit, but we will not finish it until the following week. So when spelling words go home on Monday, we will not test until Tuesday, Nov. 3 rd. Fire Prevention Month We enjoyed our visit today to the Fire Station in honor of Fire Prevention Month. This week, and into next, we are looking at the job of a firefighter, ways different fires are fought, how firefighting has changed over the last few hundred years, and reminders of how we can prevent fires and stay safe. Now is the month to check those smoke detectors, talk about your family’s safe meeting place, and practice a fire drill in your own home.

4 Mrs. Jowers’ Class News We jumped right in to unit 3, which is all about science, so it should be very interesting! This week we talked about force, magnets, and gravity. We were able to try out some fun experiments. Next week we will be moving to the stars and planets. It should be out of this world!! Don’t forget you can always check out the stories on ConnectEd. The weeks just seem to be flying by. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here before we know it! Thanks to everyone who participated in the popcorn sales and Pad night. Popcorn pick up will be on November 19 th. Every little bit of help is appreciated! Next week is our Book Fair. Family night will be on the 18 th. Book Reports are due on November 23 rd and there is no bookmobile until December, so come and pick out a book for your report! I downloaded pictures from the Fire Station trip and Halloween to the class website this week. So log on to check them out! Have a great Weekend! Where in the World? We started our new geography unit in Social Studies last week that has us asking, ‘Where in the World Are We?’ We are looking at our location in this world from the largest location, planet Earth to the smallest location, being our neighborhood. We are using Google Earth as our tech tool to learn about our seven continents, countries throughout the world, including our own, and the 50 states. Students will be able to ‘fly’ to their neighborhood to find their home next week as we zoom in closer to where we live. Hopefully your child already knows his or her address…if not, jot it down in your child’s planner for next week. We’re having a great time learning through our travels!
