3 A little about Mrs. Laudeman 23 rd year of teaching 17 th year teaching 2 nd grade 8 th year here at St. Elizabeth Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Elementary Education from Indiana University Endorsement in Gifted and Talented Education from IPFW

4 Classroom Rules Listen carefully. Follow directions quickly. Raise your hand to speak. Make smart choices. Be respectful, responsible, and safe. Do your best work.

5 Behavior Chart Green- Great day! Yellow-Warning Orange-Miss 5 min. of recess Purple-Miss whole recess (office) Red-Contact parents **Children should color in their color in their planner each day. Please check your child’s planner daily.

6 Homework Tuesdays-Read story of the week to a grownup. Thursdays-Study spelling and review for story test. Fridays-Study for religion test. Other tests, etc. do not always fall on the same day. Most days we will have math. All ASSIGNED homework should be written in planner. Work not finished in class will just be in the bring right back side of folder.

7 Correct and Return Any papers marked correct and return should be corrected as soon as possible and returned to school. These papers will be rechecked and sent back home. Children learn from their mistakes

8 Ways to Help Your Child Have your child read a lot. The more you read, the better you get. Read to your child. Have your child retell a story he/she just read. Ask questions such as, “Why do you think that character did that?” “Did you ever do something like that?” (Connections to self), “Can you think of another book you read where something similar happened ?” (Text to text connections).

9 Comprehension Is Important We will focus on comprehension strategies in our reading groups and in whole class. Text to Self Connections Text to Text Connections Visualizing Questioning Nonfiction comprehension strategies

10 More Ways to Help Your Child Practice math facts. Basic math facts are the foundation for more advanced math. Having them memorized helps make learning the more advanced concepts easier. We will have times math fact tests this year. (Addition and Subtraction basic facts). Those who need enrichment will be able to progress to multiplication basic facts.

11 Enrichment Problem solving skills for math Timed fact tests-Students progress through at their own rate. Leveled readers, book boxes, and literature circles for reading.

12 What to Study for Tests Story Test-Practice reading vocabulary words, reread story, retell story Spelling Test-Practice spelling words on sheet that was sent home (Spelling City, practice test, games on computer, magnet letters, etc.) Science and Social Studies Tests-Study guide will go home approximately a week before the test.

13 What to Study for Tests (continued) Religion-Review key words (highlighted) in the chapter. Chapter “test” as the end of each chapter. Math-Watch the papers that come home in your child’s travel folder. Check that he/she is understanding concepts. I will send the test from the end of the chapter to do as a review the night before.

14 Volunteers Field Trips Class Parties Thursday Helpers-Tear out and sort children’s work pages, copying, laminating All volunteers must have background check and view Safe Environment video.

15 Newsletters Sent home each Monday in travel folder. I also post a copy on my website. Includes what skills we will be working on for the week as well as upcoming test dates.

16 Birthdays Children may bring in a treat on their birthday. Let me know ahead of time if you will be sending in a treat. Those with summer birthdays may bring in a treat at the end of the year or on their half birthday. Any food allergies-let me know so I can keep your child safe.

17 Snacks We have snack every morning. Please send a snack to school with your child.

18 Specials Schedule Monday-P.E. 2:20-2:50 **Wear gym shoes Tuesday- Tech 10:30-11:15  Art 1:00-1:45 Wednesday-Library 1:50-2:30 **bring books Thursday- P.E. 9:30-10:00 **Wear gym shoes Spanish 1:50-2:20 ● Friday-Music 8:05-8:50 Spanish 12:50-1:20

19 Book Orders Optional If you write a check, make it out to Scholastic. If there is more than one book order, you may write one check for the total of both orders You may also order online at www.scholastic.com. Our class code is G2973. www.scholastic.com
