Wednesday: Share “Listening” assignments Thursday: Pre-assessment Friday: Pre-assessment Monday: Pre-assessment (11 th grade only) Looking Ahead:

There are five key active listening techniques. They all help you ensure that you hear the other person, and that the other person knows you are hearing what they say. 1. Pay Attention 1)Give the speaker your undivided attention, and acknowledge the message. Recognize that non-verbal communication also "speaks" loudly. 2)Look at the speaker directly. 3)Put aside distracting thoughts. 4)Don't mentally prepare a rebuttal! 5)Avoid being distracted by environmental factors. For example, side conversations. 6)"Listen" to the speaker's body language Add to My Personal Learning Plan. Becoming an Active Listener:

2. Show That You're Listening 1)Use your own body language and gestures to convey your attention. 2)Nod occasionally. 3)Smile and use other facial expressions. 4)Note your posture and make sure it is open and inviting. 5)Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal comments like yes, and uh huh. Becoming an Active Listener:

3. Provide Feedback 1)Our personal filters, assumptions, judgments, and beliefs can distort what we hear. As a listener, your role is to understand what is being said. This may require you to reflect what is being said and ask questions. 2)Reflect what has been said by paraphrasing. "What I'm hearing is," and "Sounds like you are saying," are great ways to reflect back. 3)Ask questions to clarify certain points. "What do you mean when you say." "Is this what you mean?" 4)Summarize the speaker's comments periodically. Becoming an Active Listener:

4. Defer Judgment 1)Interrupting is a waste of time. It frustrates the speaker and limits full understanding of the message. 2)Allow the speaker to finish each point before asking questions. 3)Don't interrupt with counter arguments. Becoming an Active Listener:

5. Respond Appropriately 1)Active listening is a model for respect and understanding. You are gaining information and perspective. You add nothing by attacking the speaker or otherwise putting him or her down. 2)Be candid, open, and honest in your response. 3)Assert your opinions respectfully. 4)Treat the other person in a way that you think he or she would want to be treated. Becoming an Active Listener:

1)First student shares their interview summary and explains their creative component. - No one else talks, they just listen. (two minutes) 2)The rest of the group gives positive feedback and talks about the interview and creative component. (one minute) 3)The group asks questions and the student that shared can respond and elaborate. (4-5 minutes Small Group Share-out Protocol:

1)The most interesting thing that I heard today was… (Who shared/said it?) 2)Overall, I found this assignment to be _____________________ because… 3)If I could do this project over again one thing that I would do differently would be _________________ because… Exit Ticket:
