.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section B Teacher Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Offering new and challenging classes to schools that may otherwise not have that class due to budget or lack of a capable instructor. Teachers can reach out to other districts to teach other kids that are interested in that topic but the course isn't offered in their traditional school. Meeting other students from other districts, learning the equipment / technology was very beneficial. Interaction with other students and schools for the student as well as the instructor. Being able to use different forms of technology quickly. Having additional classes that wouldn’t have been offered otherwise. We got to meet people we wouldn't normally meet. Allows for college credit courses in high schools. 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Timely redistribution of graded work took several days and could span over a 5 day week. Some schools have poor aides, some schools have good aides. The TA's are critical to keep students on task and it is important to have good ones. It is difficult to do outside projects but I have learned over the years how to get more hands-on learning in. It is a little more difficult to have that up close and personal rapport with students. It is difficult to make up classes. It is very difficult to have school calendars which don't match. This year, I lost something like 21 days of instruction Our site is getting very old and needs to be overhauled. Cell phone signals from students can interfere with the sound. Missing classes with different schedules is hard to make up classes. 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Better, more up to date equipment. Counselors need to be diligent about students they let into DL. Students with challenging attitudes or significantly immature students should NOT be allowed to participate as it reflects badly on the district and affects other students learning. Often students are placed in the course for graduation credit not because they desire to learn the topic. It is a shame that field trips were forbidden by 2 of our sites. I think some wonderful friendships could have developed had the students met in person. Set aside extra time at the end of the year to make up class time missed. It would be nice to meet twice a year with the students at a remote site. It would be good to have computers in all DL classrooms. Better training for the lab assistants at remote sites. 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ It was easier than I thought. I am more comfortable with the technology than I used to be. New friendships with TA's at other schools. A better understanding about how other school districts operate. Yes, the laziness, tardiness and absenteeism of one of my connecting sites. The difference in schedules ( vacations, exams ) takes away from total face to face teaching time. Major discipline problems with students. They were eventually taken out of the class. Would have preferred they were taken out earlier. I really enjoyed it and I didn't think I was going to! There was an exceptional rapport among the students between the sites. 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Later in the year I began using some PowerPoint presentations and slide shows and I plan to use it more next year. Also many you tube clips to support instruction. Media, blackboard, pictures and internet. I tried to use the computers more, but the receiving school did not have the latest generation of computers. My students found it very frustrating & (I think the system) definitely has room for growth in this area. I used PowerPoint presentations a lot and hyperlinked videos/songs into them. I think they were effective, students performed well on the follow up activities. The Elmo equipment was very useful it allowed me to incorporate good visuals that might not be on the internet or not as clear. I used the Smart Board on the PC screen for the first time this year. The Elmo, BBC programs, and DVD's also apart of the program. 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Students would call my answering machine with a French message, or would email me home work from time to time. Blackboard, and email are both very effective. Blackboard is a life saver. Communicated by email to TA's during class, so the students couldn’t see. Did spoken exams over the phone. E-mailing assignments and other information. I visited both schools. Scotia had several visits where I taught there in addition to after school review classes one day every week. The phone to communicate with lab aide and emails occasionally. 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily …... distance learning classroom instruction (such as e-mail or telephone)? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support 7A. Did you visit your remote sites or arrange for them to visit you? Yes No There were 26 responses to this question. Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2008– 2009 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Snow is the only disadvantage in area sites. Far away sites like Tupper Lake are an impossibility to visit. Visiting is necessary to really get to know your students. I'd suggest mandatory visits during every quarter to each school. Otherwise it's too hard to get to know the kids [ Well maybe because my course has them on the computer so much. ] Budget constraints made this impossible this year, but next year it should be less of an issue. I did not, I think that I should have. Yes, gave the opportunity to meet face to face. But students were pre-occupied with my presence rather than listening to the material. I visited with a guest speaker. I did but not as often as I would like. It is great for everyone when you change host sites and teach from another location. 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)? Comments
