2 Pass the paper. Check MLA format 12 pt. TIMES New Roman, double-spaced MLA heading MLA page numbering- also TIMES 1” margins Centered title

3 Pass the paper. Read the introduction and check for the following organization: – Attention grabber/ Quotation – Transition – Thesis statement– two pieces of literature plus the authors plus the literary element Draw a box around the literary element

4 Pass the paper. Read the introduction. Check for “be” verbs and casual language– put an X over any of the following: – I/ you/ we/ us/ yours/ me/ my/ mine – Am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been – Clichés/ idioms/ too casual language – Vague language such as the word “things” or “stuff”

5 Pass the paper. Read the introduction. Check for rhetorical devices: – Parallel structure – Anaphora – Epistrophe – Antithesis – Dash If you see it, make sure it’s used “on purpose” and correctly. If you don’t see it, tell them a good place to add a rhetorical device.

6 Pass the paper. Locate the thesis statement and check for the FIRST piece of literature listed. Then check the topic sentence of Body Paragraph #1– it should be about that piece of literature. If the thesis is NOT in order and the first piece of literature is not actually first, please tell them to reorder it.

7 Same person. Read Body Paragraph #1 and check for the following order: – Topic sentence– piece of lit/ thematic idea/ literary element – Quote #1/ Evidence #1 – Commentary (at least 2 sentences) – Quote #2/ Evidence #2 – Commentary (at least 2 sentences) – Concluding sentence

8 Pass the paper. Body Paragraph #1– check the quotations. Each quote should be BLENDED with TCS. – Transition – Context – Speaker The TCS must come BEFORE the quote! C = PLOT/ not a chapter number or page number Label the TCS of EACH quote! If any part is missing, tell them to add it in. If they did not use quotes, make sure that they have NOT just written pure plot summary– this will automatically FAIL the essay on the Regents. MLA citations NOT NEEDED.

9 Same person. Body Paragraph #1– Concluding sentence. Make sure the paragraph has a concluding sentence that rephrases the TOPIC SENTENCE ideas, including the THEME Make sure this sentence uses DIFFERENT WORDS than the THESIS and TOPIC SENTENCE

10 Pass the paper. Body Paragraph #1– editing. Read the paragraph and circle any grammar/ spelling errors that you see. Cross out any “be” verbs and any cases of first or second person pronouns (quotes excluded).

11 Pass the paper. Read Body Paragraph #2 and check for the following order: – Topic sentence– piece of lit/ thematic idea/ literary element – Quote #1/ Evidence #1 – Commentary (at least 2 sentences) – Quote #2/ Evidence #2 – Commentary (at least 2 sentences) – Concluding sentence

13 Pass the paper. Body Paragraph #2– editing. Read the paragraph and circle any grammar/ spelling errors that you see. Cross out any “be” verbs and any cases of first or second person pronouns (quotes excluded).

14 Pass the paper. Read the conclusion paragraph. Check for the following items: – Rephrase thesis/ quotation – Summarize main points/ topic sentence – “So what?” question/ broad, universal statement

15 Same person. Read the conclusion paragraph. Check for rhetorical devices: – Parallel structure – Antithesis – Anaphora – Epistrophe – Dash If you see it, check that it’s used effectively and correctly. If you don’t, tell them a good place to add it in.

16 Pass the paper. Smooth it out! Check for any choppy or disorganized ideas. Similar ideas should go together. If you see any “jumps” among ideas, or any sentences that do NOT flow, tell them to “add transition” where needed.

17 Pass the paper. Final editing check. Read through the essay and CIRCLE/ CORRECT any grammar issues, especially with: – Word usage – Subject/ verb agreement – Pronoun/ antecedent agreement – Sentence structure– fragments/ run-ons – “-ing” verbs– NO NO!

18 Give the paper back to the owner. Due Friday!
