The Key Qualities of the Traits

2 Ideas Definition the piece’s content—its central message and the details that support that message Key Qualities • Finding a Topic • Focusing the Topic • Developing the Topic • Using Details Clear central theme that is focused Tells the story in a fresh way that is memorable

3 Organization Key Qualities
Definition the internal structure of the piece- the thread of logic, the pattern of meaning Key Qualities • Creating the Lead • Using Sequence Words and Transition Words • Structuring the Body • Ending With a Sense of Resolution Transition words (however, also, and clearly) and sequence words (later, then, and meanwhile)

4 Voice Definition the tone and tenor of the piece – the personal stamp of the writer – which is achieved through a strong understanding of purpose and audience Key Qualities • Establishing a Tone • Conveying the Purpose • Creating a Connection to the Audience • Taking Risks to Create Voice Purpose – to entertain(narrative), to inform (expository), or the persuade; convince (persuasive)

5 Word Choice Key Qualities
Definition the vocabulary the writer uses to convey meaning and enlighten the reader Key Qualities •Applying Strong Verbs • Selecting Striking Words and Phrases •Using Specific and Accurate Words •Choosing Words That Deepen Meaning Strong “action words” – as opposed to adding tons of adjectives that are often used to make writing more specific. Phrases can be alliteration, similes, and metaphors Specific and Accurate words – to include nouns, adjectives, adverbs as well as the verbs

6 Sentence Fluency Key Qualities
Definition the way words and phrases flow through the piece. Sentence fluency is known as the auditory trait because it’s “read” with the ear as much as the eye. Key Qualities • Crafting Well-Built Sentences • Varying Sentence Types • Capturing Smooth and Rhythmic Flow • Breaking the “Rules” to Create Fluency “Well-built” sentences = Uses transitions words such as but, and, and so to join sentences and sentence parts Varying – simple, compound, and complex sentences.

7 Conventions Key Qualities
Definition the mechanical correctness of the piece. Correct use of conventions (spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar and usage) guides the reader through the text easily. Key Qualities • Checking Spelling • Punctuating Effectively • Capitalizing Correctly • Applying Grammar and Usage

8 Presentation Key Qualities
Definition the physical appearance of the piece. A visually appealing text provides a welcome mat. It invites the reader in. Key Qualities • Applying Handwriting • Using Word Processing Effectively • Making Good Use of White Space • Refining Text Features Neatness, is it legible? Font size and style selecting readable? Margin size, using a border in a poem or letterhead in a letter Text features = headings, page #s, bullets, alignment
