1 1 Multi-Track Recorder Typical Usage Scenario Demonstration

2 Overview of Concept One of the main goals that our Multi-Track Recorder is designed to accomplish is creating an easy to use system for on-the-fly musical recording. The software allows 4 audio tracks to be recorded and overdubbed, adjusted, looped and modified using special audio effects. This allows musicians to capture new ideas quickly and easily, without having to use expensive equipment.

3 How It’s Used – Consider the following: Bob is a guitarist, and plays in a local indie rock band. He is the primary songwriter for his band, and he sometimes has trouble communicating his musical visions to his bandmates. Although he does own some home recording equipment, it is not always convenient and time effective to set up microphones, configure a recording session in his Digital Audio Workstation, record, mix, and burn a disc of his musical ideas in order to present them to his bandmates.

4 How It’s Used – Consider the following: In order for Bob to easily be able to record his ideas and communicate them to his bandmates, he would benefit from a software application that has the following features:

5 Features: Runs on portable a portable device so that ideas can be recorded on-the-fly Records audio in loops so that repeating rhythm parts only need to be recorded once, but can be played over and over Records multiple tracks that can be played back simultaneously, so that multi-instrument compositions don’t have to be recorded in one take

6 Features: Allows the volume of each track to be adjusted in order to ensure that all tracks are able to be heard Click track, in order to aid in recording the tracks in time Adjustable tempo and loop length Multiple audio effects that can be applied after recording

7 Usage Scenario A typical usage sequence for our application is: 1. Launch application 2. Create new project 3. Name the new project 4. Edit project settings 5. Record audio track 6. Play audio track 7. Record additional audio tracks 8. Play mix and adjust track levels 9. View track details 10. Add track effects 11. Play completed mix

8 Step 1: Launch Application From the Home screen, the user will click on Applications, and then select “Multi-Track Recorder” to launch the program

9 Step 2: Create New Project Once the application has been launched, the user will be prompted to either open an existing project or create a new project. In this case, the user will select “Create New Project”.

10 Step 3: Name the New Project A dialog will appear, prompting the user to enter the name of their new project. They can click “OK” to confirm or “Cancel” to go back without making a new project file.

11 Step 4: Edit Project Settings Once a project has been created, the user will click on the menu button, and select “Settings.” Here the user will set the tempo, turn on/off the click track, and set the loop length.

14 Step 5: Record Audio Track The user will select a track for recording using the checkboxes next to each track. Then the user will click on “Standby” to go into record standby mode.

16 Step 5: Record Audio Track This will enable the record level indicator for the track that is currently selected. This is used so that the user can make sure that the audio being recorded does not distort.

17 Step 5: Record Audio Track After the recording level is verified, the user will click “Record.” This will initiate a count-in and then start recording. Once the loop length has been reached, recording will stop automatically.

18 Step 6: Play Audio Track Once a track has been recorded, the user can play the recording by clicking “Play.” This will play the recording in a loop until “Stop” is pressed.

19 Step 7: Record Additional Tracks After an audio track has been recorded, additional audio tracks can be recorded “on top” of the existing tracks, so that they will play back simultaneously.

20 Step 7: Record Additional Tracks When the user clicks “Record,” after the count-in, the existing audio tracks will begin playing while the current track is being recorded.

21 Step 8: Adjust Track Levels After multiple tracks have been recorded, the user can play the entire mix by clicking “Play.” While the mix is playing, the user will be able to adjust the mix level of each track by moving the volume sliders to the left or right.

23 Step 9: View Track Details The user can rotate the device into landscape view to view the details for the selected track. This view would show the waveform of the track and any effects that have been applied or that are available.

24 Step 10: Add Track Effects From the track details view, the user can click on an audio effect. This will add the effect to the track and bring the user to a screen where the parameters of the particular effect can be manipulated.

25 Step 10: Add Track Effects Effects with adjustable parameters are to include, equalization, delay, and phaser effects. Clicking the button with the corresponding title brings up parameters for the effect.

26 Step 10: Add Track Effects (EQ) The equalizer allows the user to manipulate three sliders to adjust different frequency bands in the current track, to fine-tune its sound. Clicking preview plays 10 seconds of audio with the new settings.

27 Step 10: Add Track Effects (Delay) The delay effect contains four editable parameters to create echoes in the track with varying subtlety. Again, preview is clicked by the user to hear 10 seconds of audio with the effect applied.

28 Step 10: Add Track Effects (Phaser) The phaser effect modifies the phase of the waveform to create an interesting sound. The effect has 3 editable parameters and can also be previewed while adjusting how the effect sounds.

29 Step 11: Play Completed Mix After the track effects have been applied, the user can return to the main project screen by rotating the device back into portrait mode. Here the mix can be played with track effects applied.
