2 Rationale 1. This area of study is important because students need to become aware of their environment and the environments of others. 2. Students need to learn about different society’s and how they are to interact within these society’s in order to become upright citizens. 3. Students need to learn about the various types of people they might come into contact with throughout their lives. They need to know these people’s history and how they have developed through time in order to respect their culture.

3 Goal To have students recognize the similarities and differences between their culture and the culture of others.

4 Objectives 1. The student will be able to place historical events into a chronological sequence. 2. The student will be able to recognize problems in society and the effects these problems have on communities. 3. The student will be able to describe how people in different societies make their living. 4. The student will be able to recognize why rules are important and how they work differently in different societies. 5. The student will be able to describe changes in communities through the activities of others.

6 American Heritage Websites 1. www.americanheritage.com -on-line magazine that gives stories and facts about the world’s history and how it has effected people today. 2. www.nativeamericanheritage.com -website that allows you to learn more about the Native Americans past and the struggles they continue to have today. 3. www.callofduty.com -website that offers a look at the major wars fought in this country and how they have shaped our country and American Heritage.

8 American Heritage Activities 1. Read a book about a culture that is very different from ours for students to see the uniqueness in others. 2. Have students look up a historical event and discuss how the culture was different during that time. 3. Discuss with students the immigration of other cultures to the United States and the difficulties they had adjusting to this society. 4. Have students work together to construct a timeline of historical events in this country. 5. Have students discuss with their parents what society was like when they were growing up and how it is different from today’s society.

Have students think of people who have come and gone during their lives and how that effected them and the people around them. 3. Have students ask their parents about the areas they grew- up in and what type of community setting these areas were like. 4. Have students make a timeline of events that have happened in their lives over the past week and discuss how certain events have had an effect on the things they did next.

15 World Interactions Activities 1. Have students explore an area that has recently been hit by a natural disaster and discuss how that will change the community short term and long term. 2. Have students compare and contrast physical and human features in their community to those in pictures of other countries. 3. Have students identify the different types of leaders in their community and what their roles are within the community. Compare and contrast to other leaders in other countries. 4. Read the book “Whoever You Are” by Mem Fox to show students how other countries have similarities to each other.

Give students a certain amount of money and a list of products. Encourage them to buy the items they think will last longer and help them to survive if they were only given small amounts of money every month. 3. Have students research the resources that people in poorer countries have access to and how that is different from the resources the United States have.

Have students make a list of the items they favor and then have them think of which items they would give up first if they had to and what their reasoning would be behind their choices. 5. Have students study a map that clearly shows the United States along with other countries and discuss the physical features of each of these areas. Discuss how these features can help or hinder an economy.

Have students make a list of their own rules and discuss the importance of each rule. 3. Have students discuss various rules they have to follow each day and why these rules are important to follow. Discuss consequences if they didn’t follow these rules. 4. Have students make a list of people that have authority and discuss reasons for having people in authority. 5. Have students research the rules that govern our state and discuss the importance of each rule.

Discuss how the actions of people effect a community. 2. Have students list ways they can be good citizens and how this will help their community and other communities. 3. Have students join an organization that provides support to other countries and communities around them. 4. Have students organize a community clean-up. 5. Have students develop several global solutions to the problems in the world such as poverty, natural disasters, etc.

28 Conclusion This lesson should have brought the students to a beginning understanding of the way cultures develop and live. Hopefully they learned to respect the differences in others and to look for similarities in order for them to understand other cultures.
