2 American Westward Movement In order to get more land, Americans moved west into Texas territory. Stephen Austin received the ability to form a colony in east Texas. By 1830, 7,000 Americans lived in Texas territory. By 1835, 30,000 Americans lived in Texas territory.

3 American Westward Expansion When numbers of Texans increased the Texans demanded for more political control. They continued to fight for those rights. –They said, “I will fight for independence if Mexico denies our request”

4 The Alamo Sam Houston led an army of several thousand to put down a rebellion The Texans at the Alamo had been led by William Travis and James Bowie.

5 The Alamo The Battle of the Alamo –Lasted for 13 days –4,000 Mexican casualties –180 Texan casualties Of the above, Bowie Travies and Davy Crockett died Texans went under seige by mexican group Mexicans eventually won

6 Attack at Jacinto Just as Santa Anna thought he had won, a group of around 800 Texans led by Sam Houston invaded and captured Santa Anna at the Jacinto River and made him sign the Treay of Valasco which would give the Texans government over Texas

7 Santa Anna Led army of 7,000 men to put down Texan rebellion After 13 days of siege he broke the Texan’s wall in the battle of the alamo Took no prisoners, killed all that surrendered

8 Davy Crockett After political career ended, he went to Texas Joined the Texan effort in San Antonio Died at the alamo Also fought against Indian nations under Andrew Jackson

9 Sam Houston Major general of the Texan Army The city of Houston is named after him Led Texans to victory at San Jancito a year after Alamo Became president of republic of Texas

10 Steve Austin Was a Texan Diplomat Joined Texas fighting forces and became commander in chief The city of Austin was named after him
