2 Colonizing Texas In 1820 Texas was home to a few Americans, many Native Americans, and about 3,000 (1) Tejanos (Mexicans). Spain used empresarios (large tracts of land) to encourage settlement and gave one to (2) Moses Austin. Soon after Mexico wins its independence and the 300 families in Austin’s settlement become citizens of (3) Mexico.

3 Conflict in Texas Conflict soon arose over the right to own (4) slaves. In 1833, Stephen Austin petitioned for a repeal on the ban of white settlers and the creation of a (5) separate Texas state. (6) Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the new head of Mexico, imprisoned Austin. Steven Austin

4 Texas Independence Santa Anna then suspended the Mexican constitution and established a dictatorship. Lead Texans to declare independence.

6 The Alamo Meanwhile, 180 texas soldiers (Anglos and Tejanos) including (9)William Travis, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett took cover and defended an empty mission called the Alamo. Davey Crockett’s Last Stand Santa Anna Recaptures the Alamo

9 Goliad Massacre James Fannin, commander at Goliad, surrendered to the Mexican army. Santa Anna had 350 men lined up in front of a firing squad and executed in the (10) Goliad Massacre.

10 Battle of San Jacinto News of the events at the Alamo and Goliad spread like wildfires resulting in thousands joining the Texas revolution. Tejano leader, (11) Juan Seguin, fought next to Houston in the largest battle of the war. 600 Mexican soldiers died 9 Texans died Juan Sequin Battle of San Jacinto

11 Republic of Texas On May 14, 1836, Santa Anna signs a peace treaty and Sam Houston becomes the President of a new nation called the (12) Republic of Texas.
