4 COMPOSER’S BACKGROUND →youngest of five children →His family was quite wealthy and owned a lot of land. →This was quite fortunate on account of the fact that his father, who Arcangelo Corelli had been named after, had died a month before he was born, leaving his mother a widow. →corelli was never married →Composer had a passive aggressive attitude, yet remained modest man

5 Composer’s musical career → It is thought that his first teacher was the priest of San Savino, a village on the outskirts of Fusignano. →Between 1666 and 1667 he studied with Giovanni Benvenuti, violinist of the chapel of San Petronio in Bologna. Benvenuti taught him the first principles of the violin- age 13 - 18 studied at Bologna →In 1670 Corelli was initiated into the Philharmonic Academy of Bologna. →By 1675, he was already third violinist in the orchestra of the chapel of San Luigi dei Francesi →in 1685 Corelli moved to Rome, Italy where he led the festival performances for Queen Christina of Sweden. →September 1687 until November 1690, Corelli was musical director at the Palazzo Pamphili, where he both performed in and conducted important musical events →Corelli also taught at the German Institute in Rome and certain that in 1700 and was a player and conductor for the concerts of the Palazzo della Cancelleria →in 1702 Corelli went to Naples, where he probably played in the presence of the king

6 Composer’s significance →Corelli’s music was performed and honored throughout all of Europe; in fact, his was the most popular instrumental music →Without Corelli’s successful models, it would have been impossible for Vivaldi, Handel, and Bach who have given us their Concerto Grosso masterpieces →Opus 4, was published in 1964 with a dedication to a new patron, Cardinal Ottoboni, the young nephew of Pope Alexander VIII, after Cardinal Pamphili removal in 1690 to Bologna →In 1685 Corelli was in Rome where he led festival performances of music for Queen Christina of Sweden →The Concerto Grosso form is built on the principle of contrasting two differently sized instrumental groups. In Corelli’s the smaller group consists of two violins and a cello and the larger group a string orchestra

9 Meaning of corelli’s concerto grosso Fatta la notte di natale: Made especially for Christmas Eve. Opus (work) means separate composition or set usually by date of publication. The Christmas Concerto, Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 8 represents the beginnings of concerto form. The make of Corelli’s concerto grosso form consisted of concertina a set of small ensemble of solo instruments against a larger group of instruments which is the concerto grosso. Corelli composed music that was technically challenging to players thereby making his music accessible to a wide number of musicians of ranging standards and the fact that he can forge such beautiful music from simple elements is a testament to artistry.

10 PERFORMANCE DIFFICULTIES Individual Chris (3rd violin): Bow speed is too slow because laziness [slow reaction] during measures 78, in movement 6. MARIA E. (CELLO): STRING CROSSINGS ARE TOUGH WITH INVOLVED EIGHTH NOTES WITH THE ADDITION OF FAST TEMPO. Need faster bow speed in movement 2. Savannah (bass): shifting in movement 6, measure 94 Section Chris: Violins are struggling with intonation during measures 20 of 4th movement vivace because of less bow pressure. maria e and savannah: cello is struggling with the fast tempo of movement 2 and overall movement 2 allegro is the most elaborate and tough part for both cello and bass.

11 connecting the COMPOSER’S OUTPUT w/ HISTORICAL EVENTS corelli’s musical career as you can see was very successful. Arcangelo corelli produced, conducted and played music that would excite any audience. his compositions were either made for the church or a person of royalty. his music would please audiences of any sort, even though their music preferences are opposite; soft and slow or loud and fast. corelli composed in a way that would include both personalities of his audiences. For example, corelli’s christmas concerto involves an allegro part and a largo part which represents the nativity scene. Also corelli performed at many musical festivities for queen christina, and as a result of this anyone can see that corelli’s compositions are challenging including a fluttery or intense feeling. this all goes to show how great of a composer, conductor and performer corelli was. You can draw how he succeeded throughout his life just by admiring his style of composing music and the outcome of historical events he committed to.

12 →corelli has the same exact name as his father. it’s sometimes rare that a father and son’s name are exactly the same in our country today. It was normal in Italy at that time. →cardinal ottoboni became corelli’s main patron, who made it possible for corelli to pursue his career without monetary worries →corelli’s achievements as a teacher were again outstanding. among his many students included antonio vivaldi! →it was vivaldi who became corelli’s successor as a composer of the great concerto grosso and who greatly influenced the music of bach →corelli is one of the most famous baroque composers. named the “founder of modern violin technique FUN FACTS
