AFD / UNEP Project 3 components $2m regional project SPREP administered $4m sub-regional and individual country / territory projects Should commence in second half of 2008 Project proposals will be required in first half of 2008 Project focussed on 2 – 3 year projects with strong chance of success

Regional Component Initial phase - $100k to hold project planning workshops in-country Put proposal to SPREP – priority project, when, project network group Next phase: Pilot projects on a) Economic instruments for waste management b) Waste minimization through composting c) Education, training and capacity building d) Special issues of waste management on atolls and small islands e) Communication and dissemination,

SPREP Component Demonstration projects (probably 2 – 3 countries each) Bulky wastes using economic instruments ( based on the Kiribati pilot) Organic waste minimisation – focus on atolls as highest priority All have capacity building component

SPREP Component Capacity building programme Projects used for “action” learning for all participants Training for whole project network in project management, budgeting, other generic skills Individuals in project team can enrol in academic course for graduate certificate or diploma Courses will be accredited with FSM, USP, UNC Information and Communications Disseminate lessons learned

Component 2 : Sub-regional Administered by private consultant company Tender open now TOR, project governance, project criteria, project selection to be developed Possible projects are Commercial Recycling Hazardous wastes Appropriate technology eg banana starch-based plastic bags

Component 3 : Country Projects Suggested criteria for selection any solid waste project that is consistent with Regional or National Strategies compatible with other sponsors, NGO work replicable elsewhere “do-able”in 2-3 years “support those countries which have put in place good management of wastes or made efforts to improve these conditions”

What do you need to do? Write to SPREP to schedule project proposal workshop Determine which project (s) you wish to develop Determine whether you wish to be part of SPREP demonstration projects (Bulky waste, organics) Project proposal must be ready in 6 months Document your country’s progress SPREP can assist with details (budgets; log frames; sustainability: etc)
