On the Menu  Background on Be Spartan Green  Green information technology  Idea exchange

What is Be Spartan Green?  Boldness By Design  Environmental Stewardship at MSU  January 2008: 26 recommendations –Energy –Material waste –Behavior –Purchasing –Communication & Education

Behavior Change and Culture Shift  The success of several initiatives are based on simple BEHAVIOR CHANGE  IT has a significant role in promoting and sustaining behavior change

What is“Green” Information Technology?  Information technology that provides energy and data solutions  Environmentally friendly disposal of e-waste  Emerging communication technologies for environmental campaigns

Information Technology Solutions

 How many of you remember this person?this person  Not quite the solution that we’re talking about

Energy Reduction: The 9% solution  MSU joined the Chicago Climate Exchange to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6% by 2010.  To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we must reduce energy consumption 3% HVAC 3% Lighting 3% Equipment BEHAVIOR CHANGE

Simple IT fixes for BIG energy savings  Energy save mode for computers  Disabling screen savers  Turning off computers and equipment at night or for long periods of inactivity  Installing devices, methods for automatic shut down, energy save mode, etc.

Emerging technology for conserving energy  Emerging technologies to promote environmentally sound behaviors –Watt stoppers –Eco button –Energy use monitoring (local cooling) –Sensor and continuous monitoring for real time data

Wake on LAN  Perform updates while computer is powered off  Allows a network administrator to “power on” your computer to do updates when the machine is turned off –(yes actually turned off with the button on the machine, or by an Isole Plug strip and motion sensor)

E-waste

What is E-Waste?  Computers  Copiers  Monitors  Ink toners & cartridges  Floppy disks  CDs/DVDs  Tapes  Other computer media

E-waste at MSU  MSU Surplus Store collects e-waste to be recycled –Contact MSU Surplus Store 355-0364 for pickup –Computer media is shredded, hard drives are wiped out with Department of Defense sanctioned software  Program for departments only, but working on expanding service to faculty & staff

E-waste at MSU  On average MSU sends 24 pallets every 3-4 months to be recycled  Average equipment per pallet –24 monitors –70 computers –50 printers –Some copiers  Credits back to the department

More e-waste solutions  Take back programs  Ink cartridge and toners – recycle and purchase recycled  Use less –E-mail files vs. saving to CDs –Re-writable disks vs. one time use  Green Computing Guide - www.ecofoot.msu.eduwww.ecofoot.msu.edu

Emerging Communication Technology

Be Spartan Green Campaign  Mix of traditional and non-traditional reach out methods to engage students, faculty and staff

Traditional vs. Emerging Communication  Newspaper  Radio  Television  Social networking  Blogging  Online publications

Example: Facebook  More than 70 million active users  Facebook is the 6th most-trafficked website in the world  Over 20,000 applications have been built on Facebook Platform  140 new applications added per day  More than 95% of Facebook members have used at least one application built on Facebook Platform

Question  Can you perform or support these emerging communications applications?

Idea Exchange: What ideas do you have?
