Approaches: Year Long Project Approach Style 4

Fourth and Final Suggested Approach 4.This approach utilizes the “module” as the generating force in your painting. A module is a shape (any shape), which is used over and over again in such a way as to create an all over patterned composition. This approach will undoubtedly lead you in a more controlled direction in which the painting is more or less the result of working from a predetermined plan. The technique used should probably be similar to the hard-edged approach used by artists such as Mondrian and Kenneth Nolan. Color often becomes the defining factor in the success of paintings such as these.

Piet Mondrian Left: Broadway Boogie-Woogie, 1942-1943 He was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and color. Mondrian evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neo-Plasticism. This consisted of a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the use of the three primary colors. Below: Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow, 1930 "Every true artist has been inspired more by the beauty of lines and color and the relationships between them than by the concrete subject of the picture."

Kenneth Noland Left: Doors: Time Ahead, 1989 Below: Beginning, 1958 In 1953 he adopted Helen Frankenthaler's “soak-stain” technique of allowing thinned paint to soak into unprimed canvases. [usually targets] Vivid Hues Relationships between the hues Noland tended to work in series, keeping his layouts constant while exploring different color possibilities. Noland’s work really has 4 categories: Circles Targets Stripes Shaped Canvases “For me context is the key - from that comes the understanding of everything.”

Storyline Thumbnails We will be creating a series of thumbnail sketches in order to generate ideas for the year long project. This is a means to an end, but a necessary aspect of the artistic process. The idea is for the idea to develop beyond the primary stages and to explore the possibilities. We will chose one of the thumbnails to produce on a large scale. Minimum of 10 thumbnails in the series.
