3 In the Standard Grade exam, you can be asked to describe the social, economic and political problems of LEDCs. To get full marks, you often have to give examples from a country you have studied. Today we will study Sudan!

4 Social Problems EDUCATION - Adult literacy: Male 57.7%, Female 34.6% - 1 teacher for every 55 students in secondary schools HEALTH - Under 5 mortality rate is 108 per 1000 - Life expectancy: Male 55.85 years, Female 58.08 years

5 Economic Problem DEBT – Sudan is $24.9 billion in debt Government cannot spend as much on helping the people, as have to pay back loans

6 Political Problem CIVIL WAR - Despite a ceasefire agreement in 2002, fighting still goes on - Government spends large proportion of income on weapons - Supply of food hampered during war. Armies even keep food aid - Child Soldiers
