Cellular Respiration Unit 3

Cell Growth Review 1.Cells grow and divide by mitosis and meiosis (more cells made).  In order to grow and do work, cells need energy. 2. Cell energy comes from food.

Cell Growth 3. Cells grow just like organisms do.  They do the following: A. Take in nutrients B. Release energy from food C. Get rid of waste

What is Food?!  Where do you think all of the energy to create food comes from?  How do you think our bodies turn food into energy?

What is Food?!  You probably know “food” to be any of the nutrients that are required for plants and animals to grow and survive.  In scientific terms, the definition of food is a bit different.

What is Food?! 1. In scientific terms, food is only the substances, such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids (fats) that organisms get the energy they need to grow. 2. Food gives molecules the fuel they need to build new material for all organisms.

How Plants Use Food 1. Plants use the energy from the sunlight to make sugars (glucose) out of carbon dioxide and water (photosynthesis-transfers light energy into chemical energy). 2. The food can be used immediately or can be stored for later use.  Minerals and other nutrients in the soil are not food (don’t give energy), but are needed for plants to make complex molecules.

Cellular Respiration 1. Matter is transferred FROM organisms to the physical environment (plants, air etc) when molecules from food react with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water.  Basically, cellular respiration is the opposite of photosynthesis.

Are these equations balanced?! What similarities and differences do you observe?

Cellular Respiration 2. It is through the process of cellular respiration that cells convert glucose to a usable form of energy (ATP-Adenosine Tri-Phosphate). 3. The energy stored in ATP is how cells are able to grow, develop and move
