Asiad.none of the above Bellringer: Answer the question below and write two to three sentences on why you feel so many immigrants come from that country to the U.S. More immigrants came to the United States from which region than from the rest of the world combined?

2 United States, A Nation of Immigrants? The Native Americans are the only group of people that did not immigrate to United States. – Examples of Groups Pilgrims, Irish, English, French, Italian, African Slaves, etc. – This is why the United States is called a “Melting Pot.” This country is a mix of many different cultures.

3 U.S. Citizenship U.S. Citizenship can be obtained in 2 ways. 1. Being born in the U.S. -U.S. Military base in another country counts 2. Naturalization -becoming a legal U.S. Citizen

4 2 Ways to become an American Citizen By Birth By Naturalization

5 Naturalization The process in which an immigrant goes through to become a citizen of a country. Different from the country he/she was born in.

6 Naturalization To become a naturalized citizen a person must…. –Be at least 18 years old –Have lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years –Be of good moral character and loyal to the U.S. –Be able to read, write, speak and understand basic English –Have basic knowledge and understanding of the history, government structure and the Constitution of the U.S. –Be willing to take an oath of allegiance to the U.S This person would hold a Green Card or Visa during this process.

7 The Naturalization Process

8 STEP 1 An immigrant signs a Declaration of Intention.

9 STEP 2 The declaration is filed with the USCIS-United States Citizenship and Immigration Service.

10 STEP 3 After living in the United States for a minimum of 5 years, the immigrant files for citizenship.

11 STEP 4 The USCIS interviews the applicant.

12 STEP 5 The applicant passes a citizenship exam.

13 STEP 6 The applicant pledges an oath of allegiance.

14 Duties of Citizens Duties are things you MUST do. – Examples include: Paying taxes Serving on juries if selected Registering for the Selective Service (Males only) Follow the law Attend school until the required age

15 Responsibilities of Citizens Responsibilities are things you SHOULD do. – Examples include: Voting ----- most important!!!! Being informed Being responsible members of the community Volunteer

18 Oath of Allegiance (Ticket Out The Door) Read the Oath of Allegiance and decide whether are not you think it is a good oath for new citizens to take. Explain your argument in at least 4 sentences.
