1 Electoral College A body of electors who represent the people’s vote in choosing the president.

2 George Washington 1 st president, all 11 states that passed the constitution voted unanimously for him. They saw him as an honest leader, and a hero of the revolution.

3 Precedent An action or decision that later serves as an example.

4 John Adams 1 st vice president

5 Alexander Hamilton 1 st secretary of the treasury picked by Washington. Gifted economic planner.

6 Thomas Jefferson. Secretary of state picked by Washington He had already served as ambassador to France

7 Henry Knox Secretary of war. Helped Washington run the Continental Army.

8 Samuel Osgood Postmaster general. Had government experience.

9 Judiciary Act of 1789 Created three levels of federal courts and defined their powers and relationship to the state courts.

10 1790 United States had almost 4 million people. Most lived in the country. Farmed. Farmers wanted fair tax laws and the right to settle western lands. Didn’t want government interference.

11 New York City First capital of the United States. Had more than 25,000 people in it.

12 1792 agreement 24 stockbrokers signed this agreement under the buttonwood tree on wall street. This later became the foundation for the New York Stock Exchange.
