9/8/14 Objective: How are living organisms organized and classified? Do Now: - Take out your hw and the activity (blue sheet) from Friday, leave it on your desk

With the person sitting next to you, look at the terms in your notes, see if you can arrange them (in the column of your notesheet) in order from smallest to largest (simple to complex) ecosystem, organ, population, tissue, organism, cells, biosphere, community, organ system.

A. Cell: basic unit of structure and function ex. Red Blood CellsEx. Plant Cells

B. Tissue: A group of similar cells that perform a specific job Plant Tissue Ex. Blood Tissue

C. Organ: A group of tissues that work together Heart Leaf

D. Organ System: A group of organs that work together Ex. Circulatory System Plant root and shoot system

E. Organism: An individual living things

F. Population: a group of a single type of organism living in one area

G. Community: populations of different organisms living in one area

H. Ecosystem: all of the living and non-living things in one area.

J. Biosphere: includes all of Earth

Classification of Living Organisms Classification: organizing similar species into groups - Domain: broadest level of classification - Species: the most specific classification of organisms

Classification of Living Organisms 3 Domains: organisms are UNICELLULAR and PROKARYOTIC 1. Archaea 2. Bacteria Organisms are MULTICELLULAR and EUKARYOTIC 3. Eukaria (fungus, plants, animals)

Level of Organization Activity Task: -In groups of 2, you will classify each card as the appropriate level of organization (Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Individual, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere) -Each person will complete their own worksheet to turn in
