1 Ribbon of Life

2 Ribbon of Life Order (simplest to most complex)
Atoms Molecules Organelles Cells Tissues Organs Systems Complex Multicellular Organism

3 Atoms Atoms Definition- the smallest units of an element
Extra Information- They are the fundamental material things are made of They have protons, neutrons, and electrons.

4 Molecules Molecules Definition- combinations of atoms bonded together
Extra Information- Atoms bond, or stick together, to make molecules. Example: two hydrogen atoms bond with an oxygen atom and form a molecule of water (H2O)

5 Organelles Organelles Definition- the complex structures inside cells
Extra Information- Thousands of atoms bond to form complex molecules, these are organized into special structures called organelles. Different organelles perform different jobs.

6 Cells Cells- Definition- the fundamental units of life
Extra Information- Two kinds of cells: Prokaryotic-bacteria and Eukaryotic- animal, plant, protist, fungus Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus, prokaryotic don’t.

7 Tissues Tissues Definition- lots of cells of the same kind working together Extra Information- Only in multicellular organisms (plant and animal). Not in bacteria, protists, or single-celled fungi.

8 Organs Organs Definition- two or more tissues working together
Extra Information- Animals have many organs. Examples in humans- lungs, liver, kidney, heart. Plants have 3 organs- roots, stems, and leaves

9 Systems Systems- Definition- organs and tissues working together
Extra Information- Examples in humans- circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems Example in plants- vascular system

10 All this makes… Complex Multicellular Organism-
Definition- plants and animals Extra Information- Plants and animals are highly organized, complex, free living life forms. They are organisms made of up to millions of cells organized into many kinds of tissues, organs, and systems.
