3 What is protection?

4 Our common definition All activities aimed at ensuring respect for the rights of the individual in accordance with the letter and the spirit of relevant bodies of law, including international human rights, humanitarian, and refugee law. Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC)

6 How is protection done? Rights and Community-based: securing respect for and protection of human rights and ensuring empowerment, participation and partnership Age, gender and diversity: promoting equality and non discrimination

7 Rights-based Approach Based on rights, in respect of relevant bodies of law, including international law Contributes to furthering the realization/ fulfillment of rights Strengthens the capacities of rights- holders to claim their rights, and of duty- bearers to meet their obligations

8 Community-Based Approach Ensuring that women, men, girls and boys of all ages and backgrounds are engaged as active partners Recognizing resilience, capacities and resources Building on communities’ capacities and strategies to protect themselves

9 Age, Gender and Diversity “A philosophy of always looking at possible needs of groups or individuals in a population”

10 Age Age refers to the different stages in one’s life cycle Children, adolescents, adults and older persons are exposed to different risks and have different protection needs

11 Gender Gender refers to the socially constructed roles of women, girls, men and boys Gender roles are learned, changeable over time, and variable across cultures Gender equality refers to the equal enjoyment of their rights, responsibilities and opportunities

12 Diversity Diversity refers to different values, attitudes, cultural perspectives, beliefs, ethnic background, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, health, social status, skill and other specific personal characteristics
