Macromolecules The world around us!!

What is a macromolecule? A macromolecule: These are giant molecules made from hundreds or thousands of smaller molecules. –They are formed in a process known as polymerization. Polymerization is a process where large molecules are created by joining together little ones. The little pieces are known as monomers. Many little pieces together is known as a polymer

The Four Main Types of Organic Compounds Found in all Living Things Are: Carbohydrates Lipids Nucleic acids Proteins That is right you guessed it they are ALL MACROMOLECULES!!!!

Carbohydrates Made up of Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), and Oxygen (O) Used in living organisms for ENERGY. –Broken down sugar gives our cells energy. –Starches are complex carbohydrates used for storing extra sugar. Example: Potatoes

Lipids Made up of fatty acids and glycerol. –1 glycerol head and 3 fatty acid chains Examples: Butter and oil Used to store energy. Cell membranes are also made of lipids to keep water out.

Nucleic Acids Made up of many nucleotides. –A nucleotide is made of a: Nitrogen base, ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. Used to store genetic information and transmit it down a family line.

2 Main types of Nucleic Acids 1. DNA: Deoxyribonucleic acid –Contains Deoxyribose sugar 2. RNA: Ribonucleic Acid –Contains Ribose sugar

Proteins Contain Nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. –They are many amino acids strung together. Used to control the rate of reactions, regulate cell processes, form bones, and transport substances across cell membranes.

Lets Review What is a macromolecule? What are Carbohydrates made up of? What are lipids made up of? –Who can give me an example? Nucleic acids are formed from what? –What do they store? What makes up a protein?
