Naming compounds

NOTECARDS Use the information in this powerpoint to create one notecard per page Staple the notecards Ionic compounds Molecular Compounds Include definitions for each, examples and practice problems

NamingBinary Ionic Compounds composed of a metal and a nonmetal TYPE 1: non transition metals Metal Cation is a positive ion and named first Nonmetal anion is negative ion and named second with –ide ending Polyatomic ions may take the place of the cation or the anion depending on their charge Name the polyatomic ion as is.

PRACTICE MgO KCl CaBr 2 Al 2 (SO) 3 (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4

Naming Binary Ionic compounds Type II: transition metals Many metals con form more than 1 type of cation. Identify the charge of the anion to help you determine the cation charge The net charge equals zero Use roman numerals to indicate the charge of the cation indicating the charge in parenthesis, Write the cation, the roman numeral to indicate the charge in parenthesis, then write the anion ending in –ide If the anion is a polyatomic ion, name it as is.

PRACTICE Cu CO 3 FeCl 3 HgSO 4 CuI Cu 2 O

Binary Compounds that contain nonmetals MOLECULAR Use prefixes to denote the number of atoms present Mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta, octa, nano, deca The prefix –mono is never used for naming the first element Name the first element in the formula, then the second element with –ide ending Prefix + name, prefix + name, -ide ending

PRACTICE CO CBr 4 P 2 O 3 SiS 2 S 2 F 6

Writing Ionic Formulas Write the symbol for the metal first and then the symbol for the nonmetal Write the oxidation number (charges of these ions) taken from the periodic table Criss-cross The total charge equals zero

Use the Criss- Cross Method sodium chlorate Na + + ClO 3 - Na ClO 3 (does the charge add to 0?) (+1) + (-1) = 0 calcium chloride Ca 2+ + Cl 1- CaCl 2 does the charge add to 0? (+2) + 2(-1) = 0

PRACTICE Sodium nitrate Potassium chloride Calcium phosphate sodium hydroxide Copper (II) dichromate Chromium (IV) Bromate

Writing molecular formulas Use prefixes in the name to determine subscripts For example Pentanitrogen heptaphosphide N 5 P 7

PRACTICE Dinitrogen heptafluoride triphosphorous hexachloride Tellurium trioxide Dinitrogen tetraoxide Diohosphorus pentaoxide
