1 The ABC’s Of Plants By: Jessica Beverly

2 Audience This book is aimed towards grades k-3 to help enrich their understanding about plants.

3 Standards LSCS.1- Living things have basic needs, which are met by obtaining materials from their environment. LSCS.2- Living things survive only in environments that meet their needs.

A is for air One of the basic needs of plants is air. Without air, plants would not be able to live and grow, just like us!

5 B is for biomes Biome’s are where plants grow. There are many different kinds of biomes such as the desert, forest and grassland.

6 C is for chlorophyll Chlorophyll is what makes leaves green! Chlorophyll grabs the sunlight and helps to start making food for the plant.

7 D is for dirt Dirt is also known as soil. Plants are often grown in soil but can also be grown in sand and rocks. Soil is what helps to hold the plants roots in place.

8 E is for energy The sun gives us energy. Plants need the sun in order to live and grow. The sun’s energy help plants to make their own food.

9 F is for farms Farmers grow all different kinds of plants and vegetables otherwise known as crops. Farmers then bring their crops to grocery stores so consumers can buy them.

G is for gardening Many people grow their own garden at their home. You can plant flowers, fruits and vegetables in a garden.

11 All plants need water to grow! Without water plants will die!
H is for H20 All plants need water to grow! Without water plants will die!

12 I is for insects Insects pollinate plants. Pollen is what helps plants to make new seeds that will grow into plants.

13 J is for juicy fruit Fruit is a type of plant! Fruit can grow on trees, vines and bushes. What is your favorite kind of fruit to eat?

K is for K (potassium) Potassium plays an important role in plants. Potassium helps chlorophyll production and helps the movement of water through a plant.

L is for leaves An important part of a plant is its’ leaves. The leaves is where plants make food.

16 M is for mitochondria Mitochondria help the plant to eat and break down nutrients. It gives plants and living things more energy.

17 A nut is a fruit that has a hard shell and a seed.
N is for nuts A nut is a fruit that has a hard shell and a seed.

18 Ox Eye Daisy or just daisy is a type of flower. Flowers are plants.

19 P is for photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process that plants use to make their own food.

Queen Anne’s Lace is a type of flower. Flowers are plants. You may have seen this flower before on a hike in the woods.

21 R is for roots An important part of a plant is its roots. You do not see a plants roots because they grown under the ground. The roots job is to suck up the water and nutrients from the soil that the plant needs to make its own food. The roots also hold the plant in place!

22 S is for stem The stem of a plant holds up the leaves and the flower. The stem carries water and minerals up from the roots.

23 T is for trees Trees are a type of plant. Trees give us oxygen and shade from the sun. There are many different kinds of trees.

U is for underground When you go to plant something you place the seeds underground. All plants start as seeds or bulbs. In order for your plant to grow you will need to give it sun, water, soil, space and air.

25 V is for vegetables Vegetables are a plant. Vegetables are commonly grown in gardens and on farms. We need vegetables to help keep us healthy.

26 W is for worms Worms help break down organic matter and turn it into nutrients for the soil. The plant then picks up those nutrients.

27 X is for Xylosma Xylosma is a type of flowering shrub. Shrubs are plants just like flowers and trees.

28 Y is for your yard Your front and back yard are filled with plants! What kinds of plants can you think of that are in your yard? What about grass, trees, bushes, flowers, weeds?

29 A Zinnia is a type of flower in the daisy family. Flowers are plants!
