3 The students will explain Germany’s motives for expansion and the timid response of France and Britain by describing Germany’s blitzkrieg tactics Announcement: Chapter 16 Test Thursday March 24 Drill: Read “Bargaining for the Sudetenland” on pages 549-50 and answer the following: 1. Did Neville Chamberlain make the right decision in signing the Munich agreement? 2. How might history have been different if he had refused to sign it?

5 Winston Churchill disagreed with this appeasement policy to avoid a confrontation German Offensive Begins Germans being abused by the Poles Germany takes Poland with the non-aggression pact with USSR Hitler/Stalin signed secret treaty to divide Poland in half Blitzkrieg in Poland September 1, 1939 Hitler begins lighting war that ends in 3 weeks Phony War After the Poland invasion, a sitzkrieg began Soviet Union ended the calm by invading the Baltic States April 7, 1940-Germany took Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg

6 The Fall of France Germany took France and England retreated in June 1940 Marshal Henri Petain-aged WWI hero told his Frenchmen to stop fighting Petain agreed to terms with Hitler and set up a phony government called Vichy in southern France Charles de Gaulle set up a government in exile in England

7 Germany could not match Britain’s navy Germany used their Luftwaffe to bomb Britain and the Royal Air Force Hitler bombed London for 2 months Germany focused 1 st on airfields and aircraft, then moved to cities Radar helped Britain turn back the Germans

8 What moves did Germany make in its quest for lebensraum? Describe the tactics of the blitzkrieg Hitler and Germany used to overrun continental Europe.
