Guided Practice, Drill & Practice and Check For Understanding (CFU) Presented by: Laura, Andrea & Amy

Direct Instruction Overview

Keys for Success Unlock your students learning using these 3 keys: 1. Checking for Understanding (CFU) 2. Guided Practice 3. Drill & Practice

Goals & Objectives Goal – The student will define the methods of Checking For Understanding, Guided Practice and Drill & Practice within the strategy of Direct Instruction. Objective – Given a hand out outlining the phases of Direct Instruction, the student will correctly identify each of the three methods presented.

Checking for Understanding WHAT? - Ensuring students can perform a skill or understand concept once taught. It should be based on performance or “doing”. WHEN? – Continually through out lesson, usually after 10 minutes of instruction. After each chunk, check for understanding (CFU). WHO? – The teacher clarifies the student’s comprehension. HOW? Choral answers to given questions Choral answers to given questions Signaled answers – thumbs up or thumbs down Signaled answers – thumbs up or thumbs down Short written response Short written response Beamed questions – A question to the whole class with a sampled individual response, i.e. “Be ready to give me an attribute of a fruit” Beamed questions – A question to the whole class with a sampled individual response, i.e. “Be ready to give me an attribute of a fruit”

Practices of effective questioning Provide “Think Time” before questioning. This is a short period of time (about 10 seconds) which gives the students time to process and formulate an appropriate response. Phrasing a question properly. A teacher can a phrase a question to an individual student or the entire class. When directing a question to an individual, state their name first and then present question.

Two types of questioning Active questioning Assist students with accessing & connecting previous knowledge Assist students with accessing & connecting previous knowledge Promotes critical & creative thinking Promotes critical & creative thinking Alerts teacher to student’s needs and understanding Alerts teacher to student’s needs and understanding Reinforces self esteem Reinforces self esteem Develops positive climate in classroom Develops positive climate in classroom Didactic questioning Effective diagnosis, recall and comprehension Effective diagnosis, recall and comprehension Draw on prior learning experiences Draw on prior learning experiences What, Where, When & How What, Where, When & How Disadvantage – can stifle creative and insightful process Disadvantage – can stifle creative and insightful process

Guided Practice Praise, Prompt & Leave” By Fred Jones An activity that provides students the opportunity to grasp and develop concepts or skills under the teacher’s direct supervision. The teacher moves around the classroom to determine level of mastery and to provide individual remediation as needed. Teachers should use guided practice… √ following and as additional CFU √ prior to closure √ provide activities that match the objective

Drill & Practice Drill & practice can be conducted either orally or in a written manner. This method works well with concepts and facts that need to be mastered and recalled quickly. It provides students with enough practice to perform skill or process information automatically. Types of Drill & Practice Flashcards Worksheets Quizzes Computer software programs

Who has the key? 1. Ms. Johnson has concluded her lesson on mammals. She distributes worksheets to the entire class with pictures of 10 different animals. The instructions are to identify the mammal. 2. Ms. Perrego walks around the classroom to determine her students level of mastery regarding her lesson on energy. 3. Ms. Graeber ask her students “What was the name of our first president?”

Remember…. CFU, Guided Practice, and Drill & Practice are essential parts of a Direct Instruction Lesson. CFU, Guided Practice, and Drill & Practice are essential parts of a Direct Instruction Lesson. Students’ prior knowledge influences how they interpret material. It is important to CFU to know what exactly students are getting out of the lesson and what they need to work on. Students’ prior knowledge influences how they interpret material.
