BUILDING A SHARED LANGUAGE culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) “is a way of teaching used to empower students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by use of cultural references that impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes” (Ladson-Billings, 1992). CRP rests upon the assumption that students learn best when their learning styles, cultural practices, and language background are congruent with the curriculum and instruction they receive in schools (Cochran-Smith, 2001).
